20 Public Health Associate of Applied Science Programs

Participants must be members of a paid or volunteer fire department. Technical skill training and certifications are offered through fire departments. Once the required training and certifications are acquired, fire service technology credits can be transcripted. Students then complete the General Education Core classes and apply for an A.A.S. degree in Fire Service Technology. See the program plan area for the major requirements.

Firefighting is a dynamic public safety profession that requires a wide and ever-changing range of knowledge and skills. Areas of necessary knowledge include safety, fire behavior, and suppression, rescue, emergency medical service delivery and operations, hazardous materials, building construction, detection, and signaling systems, and the incident command system. This program focuses on preparing the student for their first career in the fire service. This program includes educational opportunities for those employed within the fire service, as well as those within volunteer fire agencies.

Public health and related fields are among the fastest-growing employment sectors in the New York region and nationally. Driven by efforts to improve the health of the public, the demand for public health professionals with formal training is expected to grow significantly in the future.

This degree includes instruction in the basic sciences and aspects of the subject matter related to various health occupations. The Health Science Broad Field program provides a general, introductory curriculum in health sciences that prepares individuals for transfer to various baccalaureate degree programs.

The Associate of Applied Science in Industrial Technology degree program is designed to enable graduates to enter various fields of the industry after completing two years of study. Graduates may also elect to continue their education in the four-year Industrial Technology Program. Graduates of the two-year curriculum will be awarded the degree of Associate of Applied Science.

The Occupational Safety and Health Technology Program's mission is to provide a high-quality education that develops students in preparation for entering the career field, enhancing technical and leadership skills, and/or providing a foundation for students to pursue advanced degrees in the career field.

The Emergency Management and Planning associate degree program is designed for individuals who are seeking careers that are related to the management of emergency and catastrophic situations that are accidental, provoked, or natural disasters. The primary focus of the program is to provide an educational vehicle and skill set for professionals such as Emergency Managers, Firefighters, Law Enforcement Officers, or Medical or Allied Health personnel to approach emergency situations in a uniform fashion.

An Associate in Applied Science (AAS) degree in Fire Science is a program designed to provide students with the knowledge and skills necessary for a career in the field of fire service. Recognize the importance of ethics, professionalism, and diversity within the fire service. This degree is often offered by community colleges or technical institutions and aims to prepare individuals for entry-level positions within fire departments, emergency services, and related fields.

Students will study behavioural health concepts related to addiction and substance abuse, counselling, group dynamics, and human development during the program. The Behavior health program will also cover current trends, best practices, and up-to-date research findings.

Recognizing the need for more highly skilled firefighters, many municipalities now require additional education for their employees. The curriculum developed for the associate in applied science degree program combines lectures with hands-on activities to prepare the student to respond to a variety of emergencies. Specialists in the field provide valuable input on both content and methodology.

The MCTC Fire/Rescue Science Technology program will prepare you for the challenges facing today’s emergency responders. In this program, you will learn about fire suppression and prevention skills, technical rescue, hazardous materials, emergency medical care, and leadership.

The Fire Technology field will count toward a certificate or Associate of Science Degree. These courses are designed for students who plan to transfer to a four-year institution, gain employment in the fire service, or as a refresher for those individuals currently employed in any area of the fire service.

The Forest Restoration and Fire option prepare students with skills needed to engage in forest disturbance management and processes, including wildfire, landslides, insects, and disease. Graduates will have the knowledge and the skillset to incorporate natural processes, including disturbance, into active forest management planning.

The Addiction and Diversity Counseling degree prepares a student for counselling in an agency or institution which provides treatment for individuals who suffer from addiction. This degree also serves as a foundation for a Bachelor’s Degree in any Human Service related field and the Chemical Dependency field.
