The Mathematics and Natural Science Program provides a strong foundation for students who plan to attend a four-year institution and major in mathematics or one of the natural sciences.

Mathematics is the language of the sciences and as such, these courses are needed as prerequisites to science courses and for student success in general. In the modern world, there are many fields that need specialists in mathematics. Careers in mathematics include scientists, researchers, programmers, and other specialists in information systems, mathematics teachers, actuaries, and insurance specialists, and people who can combine mathematical knowledge with a scientific, technological, or business background. The Associate in Science degree in Mathematics will be awarded upon satisfactory completion of the Major course requirements and the General Education requirements.

The Associate in Science in Mathematics for Transfer is designed to facilitate successful transfer to a baccalaureate mathematics program. This degree provides the lower division breadth and depth of calculus, differential equations, and linear algebra. Students who complete the requirements for this degree will be prepared to continue their studies in mathematics. Students in the STEM fields can complete a majority, if not all, of their lower division Math requirements by completing the Associate in Science in Mathematics for Transfer degree requirements.

These courses emphasize the natural sciences, which examine the physical universe, its life forms, and its natural phenomena. Math courses emphasize mathematical, analytical, and reasoning skills beyond the level of intermediate algebra. Science courses emphasize an understanding of the process of science and the scientific method. Courses emphasize the use of mathematics and science as investigative tools, the role of mathematics and science as part of human civilization and society, and the inherent value of inductive and deductive reasoning as part of the human experience.

Trevecca’s Associate of Science in mathematics is a two-year degree that gives you a solid foundation on which to build a career in mathematics or to continue your studies in a variety of fields. In the program, you’ll learn to understand and construct mathematical proofs, express mathematical ideas verbally and in writing, and use mathematical methods and appropriate technologies to solve significant problems.

The Associate in Science in Mathematics for Transfer Degree (AS-T) is designed for students planning to transfer into a mathematics major. Successful completion of the program with a minimum G.P.A. of 2.0 affords students specific guarantees for transfer to the CSU system such as admission to a CSU with junior status, priority admission to a CSU campus with a similar major, and to a program or major in mathematics or similar major.

The Mathematics department strives to provide our students with the educational background necessary to pursue a successful career and to successfully transition into a baccalaureate institution. Each year, the list of careers demanding familiarity with basic mathematical skills grows. Environmental sciences, architecture, business management, nursing, dentistry, computer programming, electronics, forestry management, psychology, and photography represent only a small sample from this list.

The Associate in Science for Transfer degree in Mathematics provides students with the foundational knowledge necessary to make a successful transition into a Baccalaureate Degree at any of the CSU campuses. The Associate Degree for Transfer (AA-T or AS-T) is a special degree offered at California Community Colleges. Students who earn an AA-T or AS-T degree are guaranteed admission to a campus within the California State University (CSU) system in a similar major, although not necessarily to a specific campus. Students who complete an AA-T or AS-T are given priority consideration when applying to a particular program that is similar to the student’s community college major and will be given a special GPA advantage when applying to CSU-impacted campuses or majors. Students who are planning to pursue an AA-T or AS-T are strongly advised to meet with a counselor for additional information about this transfer program.

Students who successfully complete the AS-T in Mathematics earn specific guarantees for transfer to the CSU system: admission to a CSU with junior status and priority admission to their local CSU campus and to a program or major in Mathematics or a similar major. Students transferring to a CSU campus will be required to complete no more than 60 units after transfer to earn a bachelor’s degree.

The biotechnology curriculum will provide students a robust foundation in biology, chemistry, mathematics in order to transfer to and succeed in four-year institutions. Students will be familiar with various bio-techniques, bioinstrumentation as well as bioinformatics, microbiology, molecular biology, and cell biology. Students will also gain the necessary laboratory skills for entry-level in the Biotechnology industry.

The Associate of Science degree in Mathematics prepares students for transfer into the junior year of a baccalaureate degree program in mathematics, mathematics education or related areas such as statistics, actuarial science, computational biology, mathematical finance, etc. This program is also recommended for those students interested in pursuing higher studies in physics and allied fields. Graduates have transferred to colleges across the country including the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Cornell University, University of Delaware, New York University and Rutgers University.

The Associate of Science in Mathematical Sciences (ASMS) goal is to prepare students interested in pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) related fields.

The associate of science degree program provides students with a broad academic education to prepare them for the workplace and for upper-level university study. The degree requirements for the associate of science may be met through LCCC’s university transfer courses or by taking university transfer courses at other recognized colleges and/or universities. Since requirements at transfer institutions vary widely, students should consult the catalog of the transfer institution and plan their program with an advisor. Select from the general education/transfer module: English composition; Social and behavioral sciences; Arts and humanities; Mathematics/statistics/logic and natural sciences.

The Mathematics Program is designed to prepare a student for entry-level studies in general mathematics and for further education in mathematics-related areas of study. A two-year curriculum in mathematics is available for students who plan to obtain an Associate in Science degree by completing the NHSC requirements.
