9 Interior and Set Design Associate of Applied Science Programs

The Monroe Community college's interior design career program offers a solid foundation in the skills and knowledge you will need to design creative and functional interiors for commercial and residential clients.

This Interior Design program provides competency-based training in research techniques, problem solving, proficiencies and presentation skills required to be a successful professional interior designer. The program focuses on creativity and critical thinking. Students learn the basics of interior design, including the principles and elements of design; blueprint reading; building technology; color theory; materials; fabrics; history of furniture and architecture; lighting technologies; drawing for interiors; and business law for interiors. Students also gain practical experience, and throughout the program, they build a professional portfolio. Students will round off their educational experience by completing 17 credits of general education courses in five areas of study including mathematics, natural and social sciences, English and communications. Students completing the degree are eligible to take the national exam to become a licensed interior designer after appropriate completion of work experience as required by the National Council of Interior Design Qualifications (NCIDQ).

As you prepare to enter the industry in a range of roles, you’ll learn creative and technical skills from experienced professionals who share their firsthand knowledge. Our graduates pursue careers in creative positions, such as residential or commercial interior designers, exhibit designers, designers in architectural firms, and more.

The Level 2 Interior Design Assistant degree furthers the process of education by offering additional knowledge in design history, space planning, drafting, illustration, computer applications, selection and specification of materials and products, lighting, construction documents, building codes, business/professional practices, plus internship and portfolio development. Course information is applied to both residential and commercial design.

The program provides students with technical knowledge and skills, creative problem solving, environmental applications, and business practices that will allow them to enter the profession of Interior Design.

The Interior Design program teaches students how to create functional, aesthetically pleasing spaces that are both safe and universally accessible. In this program, you’ll learn the elements of design and how people respond to them. You’ll also learn to identify styles of art and architecture, and will have opportunities to think through design challenges and present them to your peers.

The primary purpose of the Interior Design Technology, A. S. Degree Program is to prepare students for initial employment in the interior design, architecture, or construction industry. This program offers a sequence of courses that provides coherent and rigorous content aligned with challenging academic standards and relevant technical knowledge and skills needed to prepare for careers in this field.

The AAS program provides up to 44 credits toward the educational requirement for the National Council for Interior Design Qualification (NCIDQ) licensing exam.

The Associate of Science in Architecture provides students with a strong foundational knowledge of the field of Architecture.
