The Environmental Horticulture Program teaches the basic skills and provides state-of-the-art information required to develop a strong foundation for a variety of career specialties within the landscaping, ornamental horticulture and the regenerative and restoration industry. The program encourages professional standards, a strong work ethic and environmentally sound management practices. Horticulture industry professionals from throughout the community serve as members of the college’s Environmental Horticulture Advisory Committee. These “hands-on” professionals provide guidance, expertise and leadership in enhancing the program’s response to community and industry needs. They meet yearly with program staff members, college administrators and student representatives to review program goals and objectives. Course offerings and content have been determined through this participation and are geared to meet the needs of the landscape, ornamental horticulture and habitat management trades.

Jobs and a preferred lifestyle are what inspire most students to enter Santa Barbara City College's Environmental Horticulture program. The department offers a one-year Certificate in Environmental Horticulture as well as a two-year A.S. degree with six areas of emphasis to choose from. "Learn by doing" is the program's philosophy. The A.S. Degree in Environmental Horticulture with an emphasis in Landscape Contracting, prepares the student for obtaining their landscape contractor's license (C-27) and becoming a professional landscape contractor. The A.S. Degree in Environmental Horticulture with an emphasis in Nursery and Greenhouse Technology, prepares the student for professional work in the nursery and greenhouse plant production field by equipping them with skills in plant propagation, greenhouse design and small business skills. The Nursery Management Specialist Associate in Science degree program provides advanced training for working in the wholesale and retail nursery industry. Students will learn growing and maintenance practices for a wide variety of plant species, advanced propagation techniques, watering systems, basic soil and fertilizer chemistry, pest and disease control, and nursery business operations.

Horticulture is the art and science of growing many types of plants such as flowers, trees, shrubs, fruits, and vegetables. Today, the use of plants for environmental improvement and appreciation while increasing plant diversity and enhancing spaces are critical for society. Horticulture professionals are needed in all areas of horticulture including production and marketing, landscape design, public gardens, and floral shops. Vincennes University offers a two-year program in Horticulture Technology that offers you a variety of options in this rapidly expanding profession. It prepares you in the occupation of landscape horticulture and production while exploring and emphasizing avenues of nursery and turf management, business management, and many different sustainable horticulture crop production techniques as well as hydroponics and aquaponics. Not only will you study courses that directly relate to modern horticulture practices, but also valuable hands-on experience is gained throughout your course work. This allows you a better understanding and provides a practical learning experience in this exciting career.

Upon completion of the Environmental Horticulture Associate in Science Degree, students will have developed skills and competencies in land­scape design and maintenance, plant propagation and production, floral design, pest management, irrigation installation, and water management. The skills and knowledge developed by students through this course of study will successfully prepare them to assume responsibility for leader­ship and management positions in horticultural business organizations and/or governmental agencies.

Horticulture technology students study applied plant science, emphasizing plant production, and use. Students are trained in landscaping, nursery and garden center operations, greenhouse management, and horticulture support operations.

The Horticulture Technology curriculum is designed to prepare individuals for various careers in horticulture. Classroom instruction and practical laboratory applications of horticultural principles and practices are included in the program of study.

The Environmental Horticulture degree prepares students for careers in landscape design, installation, and management as well as tree care, small-scale urban farming, greenhouse, and nursery production, golf course management, floriculture, and interiorscaping. The program emphasizes a combination of horticulture theory and hands-on practical application necessary for successful employment.

The Associate in Science in Agriculture Plant Science for Transfer Degree provides for applying the various principles of the biological and physical sciences in agriculture. The course offerings are fundamental and broad in scope to transfer and prepare to seek employment.

Our A.A.S. in Horticulture: Cannabis Biology and Cultivation Track expands on horticulture's tradition of teaching garden cultivation and management skills to include the understanding, and application of the cannabis plant.
