The goal of this Surgical Technology program is to prepare students with the opportunity to develop the skills and knowledge necessary to gain employment as entry-level surgical technologists and become contributing members of the health care team to function under the supervision of professional registered nurses or licensed physicians.

The Associate of Applied Science in Allied Health prepares students for allied health careers. The five-degree options consist of a block of general education requirements and selected allied health professional curriculum credits.

Surgical technologists, otherwise known as scrub techs, are operating room specialists who perform specific duties for pre-, intra-, and postoperative case management. Surgical technologists must be knowledgeable in asepsis and sterile technique and must be able to properly care for instrumentation, equipment, and supplies. Surgical case management wound care and closure, and surgical patient care and safety all fall within the realm of the surgical technologist’s responsibilities The Surgical Technology program prepares students for employment as entry surgical technologists. We offer a 63-credit Associate of Applied Science degree that takes approximately two academic years of full-time enrollment to complete. Students enrolled in our full-major Surgical Technology program complete clinical alongside working professionals in local hospitals and surgery centers.

Health Information Technology (Health IT) covers a variety of careers that keep patients’ medical records safe and secure. It is a highly ethical profession that requires you to have technical and social skills to manage electronic health records (EHR) while adhering to the federal privacy law known as HIPAA (Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act). Health IT specialists work across several different healthcare settings that include hospitals, physician offices, mental health facilities, outpatient clinics, and inpatient rehabilitation facilities. Health IT specialists are also hired to work in non-medical environments such as consulting firms, government agencies, software companies, and insurance companies. Future Health IT specialists can obtain short-term and long-term certificates, or an associate degree, to learn clinical documentation, medical coding, medical terminology, caregiver workflows, coding, and elements of prospective payment systems. You also learn the legal principles behind patient rights and advocacy issues.

The Associate of Science in Health Science (ASHS) program offers a flexible curriculum to prepare a healthcare career student. Professionals who work in allied health professions actively engage as team members to prevent, diagnose, and treat various conditions and illnesses.

Benjamin Franklin Institute of Technology is the only college in Massachusetts to offer a Bachelor's Degree in Health Information Technology. This fast-growing field encompasses a range of positions that improve patient care by developing, implementing and maintaining computerized health information systems.

The health information technology program will prepare the student to be a health information technician. The technician is responsible for performing tasks related to the use, analysis, validation, presentation, abstracting, coding, storage, security, retrieval, quality measurement, and control of healthcare data in paper-based, hybrid, and/or electronic health record systems.

The Surgical Technology program prepares students to function in the operating room environment by combining classroom and simulated laboratory instruction with actual surgical clinical experiences. Successful completion of the program allows graduates to take the national certification examination to become a certified surgical technologist (CST). Students may request consideration for advanced placement by submitting an official transcript of coursework. This program does not offer credit for experiential learning. Choose from an Associate of Applied Science, typically a 2-year program or a Technical Certificate, which is usually completed in a year or less. As a condition of participation in SGT119 Clinical I, SGT129 Clinical II, SGT130 Clinical III, students do not receive any compensation from WSU Tech or the clinical affiliate. Students assist physicians during surgical procedures, but at no time are they substituted for health care facility staff members.

Associate of Science in Surgical Technology is designed to provide the student knowledge and experience to perform effective Surgical Technology in the current market.

The objective of the Surgical Technology degree is to offer the student an opportunity to become an integral member of the surgical team as well as an allied health professional. This program will utilize a combination of classroom, lab, and clinical experiences to facilitate student learning. Multiple teaching delivery methods will cover concepts such as; the principles of asepsis, the application of sterile technique, and surgical pharmacology. Students will demonstrate competency knowledge of perioperative case management prior to entering a clinical internship. The clinical experience will continue the education of the student by offering hands-on surgical patient care through multiple surgical service specialties. Students will work under the auspice of the surgeon as well as the surgical team to gain the scrub experience required for eligibility to sit for the national CST (Certified Surgical Technologist exam) credentialing exam offered through the NBSTSA (National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting).

Radiologic Technology Programs combine education about advanced technology, physiology, and human behaviour to enable rewarding opportunities in the in-demand field of medical imaging.

Diagnostic medical sonographers are a critical part of the health care team. They help clinicians diagnose illnesses using ultrasound to image organs, tissue and blood flow inside the body.

In the Surgical Technology Program, you will learn all aspects of the Surgical Technologist's role in the operating room, including preparation for the procedure, participation in the procedure, and concluding the procedure.

Biomedical Engineering Technology appeals to students desiring to be technical, and, at the same time, devote their careers to saving lives by helping doctors, nurses, and patients. Graduates become biomedical technicians who maintain, repair and calibrate electronic medical instruments used in hospitals and other healthcare facilities. To advance in these careers, students develop interpersonal, management, communications and leadership skills.
