Environmental science is the study of the interaction of humans and the physical and biological systems of the earth, and the dependence on natural resources by humans. It involves the study of the interaction and co-evolution of human, physical, and biological systems. At TCC, you can earn an Associate in Science with a Specialization in Environmental Science. Upon completion of this program, you will be prepared to transfer to a four-year institution.

Environmental Science combines information from biology, chemistry, physics, and geology, stressing a scientific approach toward understanding the nature and scope of current environmental issues.

The Environmental Science Technology, A.S. program focuses on environmental compliance and protection of our land and water at the federal, state, and local levels. Under the direction of an environmental scientist, graduates will be expected to perform physical, chemical, and biological sampling in the field.

You’ll learn about matter and energy down to the molecular level. Courses build a solid foundation in general chemistry and develop your understanding of the scientific method of experimentation, observation, and analysis of results. You’ll also gain hands-on experience in the lab.

The environmental studies program is an interdisciplinary program that concentrates on the identification of environmental problems and the analysis of the complex interactions of human populations with the earth. The program includes discussions of technology and how it impacts the environment. Program courses incorporate the concept of sustainable development, a form of economic development that encourages economic growth while at the same time improving the quality of life and preserving the environment. The capstone course is a Field Experience course where students apply classroom knowledge to a field environmental issue. Students in the environmental studies program can transfer to four-year environmental studies or environmental science program.

Students will develop a strong foundation in the sciences with courses in environmental science, ecology, geology, biology, and chemistry. Specialized courses in environmental science technology and environmental issues emphasize scientific project management skills and career pathways for environmental scientists.

The Environmental Technology program offers an array of classes dealing with how science relates to the natural world. The primary importance of a basic understanding of science is stressed while focusing on the recognition of current topics in science and how they affect our everyday lives...

The Environmental Studies Program includes comprehensive courses in biology, environmental science, mathematics, and chemistry. It also provides optional hands‐on training through available field‐based internships.

The Chesapeake College Environmental Science Degree prepares students to transfer into an environmental science program at a four-year institution. This degree is offered through the Chesapeake Area Consortium of Higher Education (CACHE) Institute for Environmental Careers, consisting of four Chesapeake Bay area community colleges - Anne Arundel Chesapeake College, College of Southern Maryland, and Wor-Wic Community College.

Careers such as Natural Resource Managers, Water Resource Specialists, and Environmental Compliance Officers are possibilities with this pathway. This is an Associates of Science Degree that is intended for transfer. Graduates who do not plan to transfer may pursue employment.

As an Environmental Science student, you will experience a broad and dynamic field that unites a number of disciplines so you can understand the biologic, hydrologic, geologic, and atmospheric components of the Earth and the role of human beings on the Earth. In addition, an information explosion has occurred in Environmental Science that will provide you with opportunities in many facets of the field. The Environmental Science Technology program is designed for individuals wishing to enter the water and wastewater field and experienced water and wastewater operators seeking to advance their careers.

Very few things are more fundamental to the human condition and civilization itself than the natural resource base our economy is predicated upon. The state, nation and the world needs qualified persons in order to locate, utilize, and manage these resources, as well as protect human interests via environmental monitoring and remediation. Studies involving our planet and its resources are a large mandate. Thus the Department of Geosciences and Agriculture offers several concentrations under the NRES major. Agriculture – A Purdue transfer program where students may focus on the beginnings of plant or animal agriculture studies along with fundamental core courses. The success of our Purdue transfer students is over 95% Forestry and Conservation – Timber resource overuse was the origin of our nation’s conservation movement in the late 1800s. Now trained professionals to manage these and other resources for the benefit of our own, and future, generation(s). Geology – The modern science of geology was created for the purpose of finding coal to fuel the Industrial Revolution. The search for Earth’s energy resources is still an important endeavor – such as both coal and oil in Indiana. Geologists also assist in the discovery and management of mineral and water resources, as well as remediation procedures associated with resource extraction and use. Geography – A field where the “lay of the land” is studied via geospatial sciences, and weather, climate, culture, and sociopolitical boundaries are explored.

The Environmental Horticulture degree prepares students for careers in landscape design, installation, and management as well as tree care, small-scale urban farming, greenhouse, and nursery production, golf course management, floriculture, and interiorscaping. The program emphasizes a combination of horticulture theory and hands-on practical application necessary for successful employment.

The Associate in Science in Agriculture Plant Science for Transfer Degree provides for applying the various principles of the biological and physical sciences in agriculture. The course offerings are fundamental and broad in scope to transfer and prepare to seek employment.
