Environmental science is the study of the interaction of humans and the physical and biological systems of the earth, and the dependence on natural resources by humans. It involves the study of the interaction and co-evolution of human, physical, and biological systems. At TCC, you can earn an Associate in Science with a Specialization in Environmental Science. Upon completion of this program, you will be prepared to transfer to a four-year institution.

Environmental Science combines information from biology, chemistry, physics, and geology, stressing a scientific approach toward understanding the nature and scope of current environmental issues.

You’ll learn about matter and energy down to the molecular level. Courses build a solid foundation in general chemistry and develop your understanding of the scientific method of experimentation, observation, and analysis of results. You’ll also gain hands-on experience in the lab.

The Associate of Science – Transfer Degree is designed for students who plan to transfer to specific science majors at four-year colleges or universities. Students pursuing this degree are required to select a field of specialization from an approved list and will be assigned a TCC advisor to understand specialization requirements. Atmospheric Science is a field of specialization at TCC. It offers an opportunity to study the natural forces that shape weather and climate. TCC offers courses that cover the first two years of a typical four-year atmospheric sciences program. Students will earn an Associate of Science – Track 2 (Transfer) degree to enter into a four-year college or university.

The Associate Degree for Transfer in Geology prepares students for success in a baccalaureate degree in Geology with the lower division course work required to transfer into the CSU system. Students completing the Associate Degree for Transfer in Geology will be prepared to transfer to a CSU as juniors and pursue a baccalaureate degree in Geology. The Associate Degree for Transfer in Geology utilizes the scientific method to develop knowledge regarding the Earth Sciences among students interested in pursuing a baccalaureate degree in Geology with the California State University (CSU) system.

The environmental studies program is an interdisciplinary program that concentrates on the identification of environmental problems and the analysis of the complex interactions of human populations with the earth. The program includes discussions of technology and how it impacts the environment. Program courses incorporate the concept of sustainable development, a form of economic development that encourages economic growth while at the same time improving the quality of life and preserving the environment. The capstone course is a Field Experience course where students apply classroom knowledge to a field environmental issue. Students in the environmental studies program can transfer to four-year environmental studies or environmental science program.

Geologic science is the science of the earth. It is an organized body of knowledge about the earth or planet on which we live - about the mountains, the plains, the oceans, and the atmosphere. It studies the effects of geologic hazards, such as earthquakes, landslides, floods, and volcanic eruptions. It also addresses the ways to conserve and protect the world's fragile geologic environment. Planetary science concerns itself with the study of the origin of galaxies and the universe, along with the laws which order these systems and bodies.

The program is designed for students to receive an Associate of Science Degree upon completion of the requirement. This program will provide students with a basic understanding of the Earth Systems and their management, emphasizing the earth systems of the Leech Lake Reservation, using both Western science and Indigenous American knowledge.

The Environmental Technology program offers an array of classes dealing with how science relates to the natural world. The primary importance of a basic understanding of science is stressed while focusing on the recognition of current topics in science and how they affect our everyday lives...
