Chemistry technicians perform very important roles in analytical laboratories in academic, research, and industrial institutions. They perform duties such as assisting instructors to prepare materials for laboratory classes, assisting researchers to collect and analyze scientific data, or gathering data for product quality control in industries. At Berkeley City College we offer a two-year (four-semester) Analytical Chemistry program designed to provide individuals with the analytical skills needed for entry-level employment as laboratory technicians in those institutions. At the same time, the Analytical Chemistry program at BCC also prepares students for transfer to four-year colleges or universities.

Chemistry is the study of the composition, behavior, structure, and properties of matter. The study of chemistry provides insights that are central to biology, geology, materials science, medicine, environmental science, and many branches of engineering. The Associate of Science (Track 1) degree is directly transferable to most Washington baccalaureate institutions (four-year colleges and universities). Students who transfer will be granted junior standing upon transfer.

The Associate of Science Degree in Chemistry provides students interested in the physical, health, and biological sciences with a strong academic background in chemistry and the coursework required to transfer to four-year institutions or professional schools. This degree certifies a students’ ability to analyze and solve problems in the field of chemistry and other fields where expertise in chemistry is required. Chemistry related fields include the pharmaceutical sciences, food sciences, biotechnology, biomanufacturing, nanotechnology, environmental sciences, engineering, and many others. Our students pursue careers in chemistry, pharmacy, medicine, dentistry, physician assistant, laboratory technician, and other health or physical science-related careers. The degree presents the curriculum in two major concentrations; one in Chemistry and the other in Biochemistry. Thus students can select the concentration appropriate to their majors.

The Associate in Science degree in chemistry is for students interested in careers such as a chemistry research associate, chemistry laboratory assistant, medical lab assistant, or pharmaceutical and medical sales professional. It can also be used as a starting point from which to add on a Bachelor of Science in chemistry after completion of the associate degree. The Associate of Science Degree in Chemistry prepares students for transfer into traditional bachelor’s degree programs in chemistry, as well as a variety of specialized programs at four-year colleges and universities. Chemistry graduates are employed in academic, industrial, and clinical laboratories and in such fields as environmental science, chemical engineering, and chemical sales.

The goal of the Chemistry Associate in Science degree program is to provide a comprehensive lower division education program for students who plan to transfer to four-year colleges and universities to pursue completion of baccalaureate or professional degrees.

An Associate in Science in Chemistry for UC Transfer is designed for students who plan to complete a bachelor’s degree in a similar major at a UC campus. Within the Associate in Science in Chemistry for UC Transfer program, students learn how to apply appropriate theories and techniques to solve quantitative and qualitative problems. The program develops students’ ability to collect, record, organize, analyze, critically evaluate, and interpret chemical information and data.

Chemistry is a central branch of the physical sciences that focuses on the properties, composition, structure, and changes occurring in living and man-made matter. Chemists apply scientific principles, develop theories, and devise complex methods and techniques for probing the laws that govern the composition of elements and reactions between substances with a goal to create new or improved products and processes for practical use.

The Associate in Science curriculum is designed to enrich students who wish to broaden their studies in biology, chemistry, mathematics, physics, or other pre-professional programs that require strong math and science backgrounds.

The Associate in Science (AS), Emphasis in Chemistry provides the first two years of a four-year curriculum for students who wish to specialize in chemistry or are preparing for graduate programs in the area. Students may qualify as a chemical technician or chemical equipment operator and tender with an associate's degree.
