The College of Alameda Communication Department provides courses to help students enhance their personal and professional communication goals. Our classes focus on how people use messages to generate meaning in different contexts, cultures, channels, and media.

In studying psychology at the College of Alameda, you will learn from supportive faculty that recognizes the mind-body-heart connection as core to the transformation of self, community, and our planet. Students will master both western and non-western psychological theories, methods, and practices to enhance their relationship with themselves and the world by being agents of social change. We support students having a keen understanding of who they are, which carries over to their interpersonal relationships and work with others.

The CIS program at the College of Alameda prepares you for entry-level business opportunities requiring the use of computer applications, such as word processing, spreadsheet, database management, and geographical information systems (GIS) programs. Our CIS program prepares you for transfer to a university. Advanced students take programming courses, help desk and networking courses, and web publishing courses.

When you study “Politics” in our program at the College of Alameda; we seek to be supportive of your learning goals in being better prepared as a more effective “Global Citizen” in “a Knowledge Economy,” guided by democratic values, and an “ethic of public service” in the 21st Century modern world system. In all of our work together, our area of emphasis is Social Justice and futures consciousness.

The Associate in Arts in Sociology for Transfer (AA-T) is designed for students planning to transfer into the Sociology major at a California State University. A student pursuing this degree will meet the AB 1440 Transfer Curriculum Model for CSU.

Mexico/Latin American/Latinx Studies is an interdisciplinary program that focuses on the diverse histories and cultures of the Americas. A degree in this rich field will open opportunities for you in the United States and abroad. The continuing importance of Latin America for the United States and the growing Latina/o population in the Bay Area creates a number of opportunities for students to work in government, business, teaching, community organizing, law, and a host of other related fields.

The Associate of Art in English for Transfer (AA-T) is designed for students planning to transfer into the English major at a California State University. A student pursuing this degree will meet the AB 1440 Transfer Curriculum Model for CSU.

The discipline of African American Studies at the College Of Alameda will give you a deep appreciation and understanding of the impact that people of African descent have had on the ancient and modern worlds. You will draw from multiple academic disciplines, including history, sociology, communication, literature, art, dance, anthropology, and political science. Through these academic lenses, you will gain a broader understanding of the African diasporic experience in the U.S. and beyond as you will critically analyze the struggles, triumphs, and rich traditions both past and present.

The Associate in Arts in Art History for Transfer (AA-T) is intended for students who plan to complete a Bachelor’s Degree in Art History at a CSU or UC campus. The AA-T incorporates studio practice in order to encourage a rigorous understanding of creative traditions and innovations. Students will explore the relationship between art, artists, the concept of aesthetics, and their sociocultural context. The AA-T prepares students for a future in Art History.

The Associate in Arts in Political Science for Transfer Degree (AA-T) is designed for students planning to transfer into a political science major. Political Science is the study of politics using the skills of social scientific inquiry. The political inquiry examines the human use of power in relationships creating the structures operating in human society. Inquiry into politics explores power in its myriad forms and consequences for people as individuals, in groups, and in society. This realm of psycho-socio-political inquiry is an integrated field of study drawing upon all the disciplines of the Social and Behavioral Sciences as well as in the Arts and Humanities.

The Associate in Arts in History for Transfer is intended for students who plan to complete a Bachelor’s Degree in History at a CSU campus. A major component of the History program mission is for students planning to transfer into the History majors (or a similar major) with an understanding of History as the study of change over time, and we as the manifestation of that change. In other words, History is the study of us or the various components of the present. Upon completion of an AA-T in History, students will have an understanding of the diversity of the recorded past and an appreciation of the process of historical change. At the same time, a History major will gain critical reading and writing skills, which are valuable in life, and in any employment field, they choose to enter.

The AS-T degree in Mathematics is designed to prepare students for transfer into the mathematics major at any university in the CSU system. It requires fewer units than the AS degree and allows students to have a wider range of choices to complete the degree requirements.

The art department introduces a diversity of students to the world of art with classes in studio art and art history. Our mission is to create courses to help you fulfill general education requirements, earn a degree in fine art, begin a career in art, or engage with artistic creativity as a lifelong learner.

Biology courses satisfy the physical and life sciences requirements for transfer into four-year colleges and universities in majors other than biology and health science, and they satisfy the natural science requirement for an AA degree. You may also take biology courses to meet continuing education requirements in the health professions, or for personal interest.

We provide students of all experience levels with comprehensive knowledge and skills covering Diesel Engines Truck Mechanics and Chassis Systems. We currently offer an Associate Degree in Diesel Mechanics and Certificate of Achievement in Diesel Mechanics. Additionally, the department provides several fees and no-fee-based seminars and classes in conjunction with industry partners and the California Air Resources Board.
