18 Languages and Linguistics Associate Programs

The Associate of Arts in Spanish for Transfer provides transfer majors with a strong foundation not only in the four basic language skills (listening comprehension, reading comprehension, speaking, and writing) but also in the civilization and cultures of Spain and Latin America. The degree emphasizes the acquisition of communicative competence and the development of intercultural awareness, appreciation, and understanding. Completion of the Spanish: Associate Degree for Transfer (ADT) will prepare you to meet minimum lower-division admission requirements (60 transferable units) for transfer to a California State University (CSU)or the University of California (UC). For the transfer to a UC, please consult with a counselor for additional courses that may be needed. The Spanish program map below includes all of your major coursework and recommended general education courses by term that is needed to fulfill your degree and transfer requirements.

Students majoring in English choose from an assortment of courses in analytical and creative composition, literature of the United States and the world, and film studies.

The Associate of Art in English for Transfer (AA-T) is designed for students planning to transfer into the English major at a California State University. A student pursuing this degree will meet the AB 1440 Transfer Curriculum Model for CSU.

The English Department offers classes addressing English skills at the basic, developmental, and transfer levels. We are committed to presenting engaging material that addresses the varied interests and needs of our students. We are focused on helping students achieve their transfer requirements, and offering the necessary critical thinking and composition, and reading courses required by 4-year transfer institutions.

English majors study composition, critical thinking, literature, linguistics, and creative writing. English majors learn to analyze and interpret diverse texts and construct logical, well-supported arguments and literary analyses.

The Spanish department offers classes at a variety of levels, from beginner to literature. There are classes for students of Spanish as a foreign language, as well as classes specifically designed for native Spanish speakers. In addition to improving students' linguistic abilities, all courses include discussion of aspects of the culture of Spanish speakers.

Berkeley City College’s ASL Program enables students to acquire the communicative competence in ASL and the cultural sensitivity needed to interact successfully with members of the American Deaf community. The Piikani Studies&Language Associate Degree prepares students for bachelor's study in Native American Studies, Education, Law, or Philosophy. Every student in Piikani Studies&Language will experience the growth of their Piikani knowledge and critical thought through writing, reading, enriched discussions, and verbal and written analysis.

The degree requirements for the associate of arts may be met through LCCC’s university transfer courses or by taking university transfer courses at other recognized colleges and/or universities. The associate of science degree program provides students with a broad academic education to prepare them for the workplace and for upper-level university study. The degree requirements for the associate of science may be met through LCCC’s university transfer courses or by taking university transfer courses at other recognized colleges and/or universities. Since requirements at transfer institutions vary widely, students should consult the catalog of the transfer institution and plan their program with an advisor.
