Do you want to know if you have what it takes to be a nurse, physician’s assistant, or medical doctor? The Health Science courses at SJCC can address all these questions.

Respiratory care is a health specialty that offers a set of unique challenges in the areas of prevention, diagnosis, treatment, management, and rehabilitation of people with lung problems. This specialty is utilized in the hospital and home care situations, skilled nursing facilities, medical sales and health education. 

Gateway Technical College’s Nursing associate degree program is accredited by the Accrediting Commission for Education in Nursing and includes classroom instruction and supervised clinical experiences in local hospitals and other healthcare facilities. The degree program is offered at the Kenosha and Burlington Campuses but students can also take classes online. Courses include anatomy, physiology, microbiology, chemistry, nutrition, psychology and other behavioral sciences.

SanJoseCity College offers both an Associate in Arts (AA) and an Associate in Science (AS) degree in Alcohol and Drug Studies. Students planning to transfer should follow the AA degree. The San Jose City College Chemical Dependency Certificate is a certified CCAPP program and is designed to meet the California Consortium of Addiction Professionals and Programs (CCAPP) requirement of 315 hours of approved Alcohol and Drug training education; and 255 hours of Supervised Practicum. In addition the ADS program meets the requirements of the California Association of Alcohol and Drug Counselors (CAADE) with the General Psychology, Abnormal Psychology, and Social Programs certificate requirements.

Registered Dental Assisting Programs are designed to instruct women and men with the knowledge and skills necessary to perform as dental health care paraprofessionals. Students are taught to assist in all phases of general dentistry and dental specialties including prosthodontics, oral surgery, periodontics, endodontics, orthodontics, and pediatric dentistry. Through the Registered Dental Assisting Program students will be taught to perform in expanded functions, trained and licensed in taking dental x-rays, certified in coronal polishing and pit and fissure sealants. The preventive, restorative, business, and employment aspects of dental assisting are also included.

The Washington State Nursing Care Quality Assurance Commission approves the nursing program, and the program is accredited by National League for Nursing Commission for Nursing Education Accreditation. Students who complete the two-year associate degree program are eligible to take national board exams for registered nurses. The curriculum provides a strong foundation in applied and social sciences and an understanding of the fundamentals of patient care in a variety of settings. Throughout the program, students integrate experience caring for patients in acute care hospitals, long-term care facilities, and community agencies. Successful completion of this program leads to an Associate in Nursing, Direct Transfer Agreement/Major Related Program (DTA/MRP). Students with this degree need only to complete senior-level courses at select universities in the state of Washington to achieve a Bachelor of Science in Nursing. The Nursing Program is accredited by the National League for Nursing Commission for Nursing Education Accreditation (NLN CNEA, The Watergate, 2600 Virginia Ave, NW, 8th Floor, Washington, DC 20037).

San Jose City College offers an Associate in Science (AS) and Certificate of Achievement and in Medical Assisting: Clinical degree. The Medical Assisting: Clinical program prepares the student for employment as a clinical (back office) medical assistant in a physicians office, clinic, or hospital setting. The student performs a variety of clinical medical assisting procedures including physical examination, medication administration, electrocardiography, minor surgery assist, medical asepsis, phlebotomy, and laboratory specimen handling, processing, and analysis. An externship in the clinical area of a physicians office, clinic, or hospital will provide the student with the necessary experience to enter the workforce.

The Associate Degree for Transfer in Nutrition and Dietetics prepares students for success in a baccalaureate degree in Nutrition and Dietetics with the lower division course work required to transfer into the CSU system. Students completing the Associate Degree for Transfer in Nutrition and Dietetics will be prepared to transfer to a CSU as juniors and pursue a baccalaureate degree in Nutrition and Dietetics. Students transferring to a non-CSU campus should consult the catalog and determine the specific campus requirements to which they are applying. The study of Nutrition provides a broad foundation in practical and personally applicable exposure to various scientific areas of nutrition, such as Chemistry, Microbiology, Anatomy, Physiology, and Biology. Students in the program learn how the scientific method and process contribute to nutritional requirements and how nutrients function from a cellular to a more practical level and then apply this knowledge to their health. This program will help the student understand the relationship between nutrition and disease prevention throughout life.

San Jose City College offers an Associate in Science and certificate in Medical Assisting: Administrative. The Medical Assisting: Administrative program prepares the student for employment as an administrative (front office) medical assistant in a physicians office or clinic. This program is designed to prepare the student to schedule appointments, perform medical reception duties, handle financial matters (including medical collection), manage medical records, and insurance billing. The externship in the front office of a physicians office will provide the student with the administrative experience necessary to enter the workforce.

In this rewarding career, you will work with a team of health and social services professionals to provide alcohol and other drug abuse (AODA) treatment services. Through classroom, laboratory, and internship experience, you’ll develop skills in counseling, diagnosis, treatment planning, group facilitation, and crisis management.

Psychology is the scientific study of behavior and mental processes. You will learn about the different areas of psychology which include: social, clinical, behavioral, cognitive, biological, and developmental psychology. Completion of the Psychology: Associate Degree for Transfer (ADT) will prepare you to meet minimum lower-division admission requirements (60 transferable units) for transfer to a California State University (CSU) or the University of California (UC). For the transfer to a UC, please consult with a counselor for additional courses that may be needed. The Psychology program map below includes all of your major coursework and recommended general education courses by term that is needed to fulfill your degree and transfer requirements.

The Associate in Arts in Psychology for Transfer Degree is designed for students planning to transfer into a psychology major. A study of psychology is built upon the scientific study of human behavior and mental processes. Students pursuing the AA for transfer into the psychology major will study the nature of consciousness and the development of the person, basic processes of human perception, learning, cognition, and motivation; the relationship of behavior to physiology; and the nature of psychological disorders and how psychologists use their knowledge to help improve the quality of people’s lives.

The nursing discipline is characterized by its emphasis on evidence-based practice, where nurses utilize current research and clinical guidelines to inform their care decisions. This scientific foundation supports the delivery of safe and effective care, ensuring that nurses are equipped to respond to the complex needs of patients.

This transfer degree is intended to prepare students for licensure as a registered nurse, as well as for entry into a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) completion degree. Although this associate's degree will be granted to SVC nursing students with a cumulative 3.0 GPA, entry into a BSN program may require a higher GPA for admission. Minimum GPA requirements are established by each receiving institution. Meeting SVC’s minimum GPA requirements does not guarantee admission into a BSN program.
