162 Creative Arts and Design Associate Programs

The Art Department offers both an Associate in Arts Degree. Various required and elective courses focus on individual creative development and provide a broad range of classroom and studio experiences. Art courses fulfill requirements for transfer or prepare students for careers requiring competency in visual media.

San Jose City College offers both an Associate in Arts (AA) and Associate in Science (AS) in Art degree. Students planning to follow a transfer pattern should use the Associate in Arts degree. This degree may not transfer to all universities, and students need to inquire of the universities if they have a bachelors degree for their upper division course work. The Associate in Science has 2 possible areas of emphasis: Drawing and Painting or Photography. A minimum of 3 courses in the Art major must be taken at San Jose City College. A grade of "C" or better is required in each course in the major and area of emphasis for graduation.

The Liberal Arts Degree: Arts and Humanities is a group of courses emphasizing the human condition — its limits, potential and creative expressions — through the study of cultural, literary, and artistic expression of human beings.

Graphic communications is a great career for creatively minded people who also enjoy computers and technology. Though the tools for design have changed from pen and paper to computers and software, ideas and artistic skill are still important. If you are a creative person with technical savvy, this career is for you. After earning the associate degree, students can pursue a number of certificates that focus on areas such as digital photography and digital publishing.

The Interior Design Department offers courses for individuals interested in preparing for careers in interior design. Included in the program are a transfer program, an AS degree, and three Certificates of Achievement: the Interior Design Certificate, the Kitchen and Bath Certificate, and the Home Staging Certificate.

The Apparel Design And Merchandising (ADAM) Program is an affordable industry-driven curriculum that meets current trends and technology in an ever-expanding field. ADAM offers the opportunity for a creative and financially stable career in the fashion industry.

The Associate in Arts in Dance degree will prepare students for transfer into a four-year dance major, minor or performing arts program. It can also prepare students for further study in other dance-related fields including performing, dance teaching, choreography, dance science, dance therapy, dance history or dance criticism. Upon completion of the degree students should be proficient in three or more dance technique styles at the intermediate level, have a firm understanding of dance appreciation and music theory, and be competent in creating and performing dance.

The Visual Communications Department emphasizes a variety of creative and technical skills in preparing students for a career in advertising, publishing, and public relations. The 2-year Associate of Technical Arts (ATA) degree also includes fundamental business practices which empower students to work in the gig economy as a freelancer and/or as part of a company. The arts and culture industry is constantly growing and looking for folks with an eye for detail, a willingness to explore the possibilities, and a passion for ingenuity.

The discipline of theatre arts includes theoretical and practical courses in all aspects of theatre, providing preparation in acting, directing, and technical theatre through productions. The degree program allows for a course of study that expands and increases creativity.

The Associate of Arts Direct Transfer Agreement (AA-DTA) degree is designed to transfer to four-year colleges and universities in Washington state. This degree provides students priority consideration in admissions for most humanities and social science majors at public universities (ahead of students without a degree).

The Art department is proud of its comprehensive program in the visual arts. The diverse offerings include classes in studio fine arts (drawing, design, painting, printmaking, ceramics, and sculpture), and commercial art (illustration and animation). Those who successfully complete the program are awarded an associate degree or a certificate in animation or illustration. Our mission: is to prepare RCC graduates to continue their education at a four-year institution, to pursue their own artistic endeavors, or simply to appreciate the power of art in daily life.
