10 Chemistry Associate Programs

This degree is intended to prepare students to transfer to Washington’s public four-year colleges and universities and many private colleges with junior standing and the majority of the prerequisites for selected science, mathematics, and engineering majors completed. This degree partially fulfills the general education requirements as explained in the Associate of Arts, Direct Transfer Agreement, AA-DTA degree. This degree does not guarantee admission into the major.

Chemistry is the study of the properties, composition and chemical transformations of all material substances. It is often referred to as the central science since it draws from mathematics and physics and forms a necessary background to the understanding of earth science and all the biological disciplines, including the various medical professions. The Chemistry program at SJCC offers courses that satisfy general education requirements, allied-health science, engineers, chemistry, biology and physics majors.

The Physical Science Degree is designed to give the student breadth in the physical sciences while providing considerable strength in one of the specialized physical science fields. The lower-division program is virtually the same as that taken in the first two years of college by a chemistry, physics, or geology major.

The Associate in Science in Chemistry for Transfer Degree (AS-T in Chemistry) introduces the concepts and principles upon which chemical knowledge is based, including chemical structures and nomenclature, stoichiometry and solving chemical equations, the thermodynamics of chemical reactions, and theories of chemical bonding. Students will develop skills for critical/analytical thinking, perceptive reading/observation, and interpretation. The Associate in Science in Chemistry to Transfer degree provides students with a core curriculum that will prepare them with the knowledge and skills required to earn a baccalaureate degree in chemistry.
