17 Biology Associate Programs

Biology courses satisfy the physical and life sciences requirements for transfer into four-year colleges and universities in majors other than biology and health science, and they satisfy the natural science requirement for an AA degree. You may also take biology courses to meet continuing education requirements in the health professions, or for personal interest.

The AS-T major in Biology prepares students for transfer into bachelor's degree programs in Biology and similar fields.

Study the effects of natural processes and their interactions with the physical world in this two-year associate program intended to ready you for a transfer to a four-year institution. The Direct Transfer Agreement degree prepares students for upper-division study in the areas of biological sciences, environmental/resource sciences, chemistry, geology, and earth science. 

Biology helps develop an informed sense of how we may individually and collectively continue to fit into the complex ecology of our planet. Biologists are employed in research, teaching, administration, service, and sales in governmental agencies, educational institutions, private businesses, and industries. Along with chemistry, biology is also a degree that should be considered by a student whose career goal is a doctorate-level credential in a health-related field. An undergraduate degree in biology can be a stepping stone to a career as a doctor, dentist, orthodontist, or veterinarian, for example. Students should keep in mind that to gain entrance to a doctorate-level program, completing the required prerequisites is generally more important than the type of degree obtained. With that in mind, students should study the prerequisites of the programs to which they plan to apply and work closely with advisors to make sure that those prerequisites are satisfied.

The Associate in Biology Direct Transfer Agreement/Major Related Program degree is intended to prepare students to transfer to Washington’s public four-year colleges and universities and many private colleges with junior standing and the majority of the prerequisites for a Biology major completed.

A major in Biological Sciences is a preparation for advanced academic work, for careers in civil service, industry, or teaching; as a background for professional training in such fields as biological science education, biotechnology, nursing, public health, environmental health, pre-medicine and all related areas of biology.

Biology is the study of life! Students in the biological sciences will learn critical thinking and develop analytical and investigative skills. According to O-Net Online, career opportunities in the biological sciences are growing at a rate 10-14% faster than the national average. The Biology program map below includes all of your major coursework and recommended general education courses by term that is needed to fulfill your degree and transfer requirements. This pathway is geared toward students working toward transfer to CSU, but can be used for transfer to University of California (UC) System as well. Those students working toward transfer to UC should take CHE-12A and CHE-12B (Organic Chemistry I and II) instead of or in addition to PHY-2A and PHY-2B.

You'll get hands-on laboratory and field experiences using investigation methods and experimental techniques that reflect the current state of biological science. In addition to traditional laboratory materials, you'll use DNA and protein electrophoresis, PCR, and other biotechnology equipment in our high-tech laboratories.

This degree is intended to prepare students to transfer to Washington’s public four-year colleges and universities and many private colleges with junior standing and the majority of the prerequisites for selected science, mathematics, and engineering majors completed. This degree partially fulfills the general education requirements as explained in the Associate of Arts, Direct Transfer Agreement, AA-DTA degree. This degree does not guarantee admission into the major.

The Associate in Science in Biology for Transfer, also called the Biology AS-T Degree, is designed to prepare students for a seamless transfer with junior status to a CSU campus in a program or major in Biology for completion of a baccalaureate degree. Upon successful completion of courses leading to the Biology AS-T Degree the student will be able to know and understand Biology concepts, skills and applications to attain upper division status in Biology at any CSU institutions.
