The Art Department offers both an Associate in Arts Degree. Various required and elective courses focus on individual creative development and provide a broad range of classroom and studio experiences. Art courses fulfill requirements for transfer or prepare students for careers requiring competency in visual media.

San Jose City College offers both an Associate in Arts (AA) and Associate in Science (AS) in Art degree. Students planning to follow a transfer pattern should use the Associate in Arts degree. This degree may not transfer to all universities, and students need to inquire of the universities if they have a bachelors degree for their upper division course work. The Associate in Science has 2 possible areas of emphasis: Drawing and Painting or Photography. A minimum of 3 courses in the Art major must be taken at San Jose City College. A grade of "C" or better is required in each course in the major and area of emphasis for graduation.

The Associate Degree program in Art is designed for students intending to enter the fields of design, illustration, art history, and art education. The program offers two state-approved degrees: 1) Ceramics, and 2) Drawing and Painting. The program also offers coursework in Computer Graphics/Multimedia and Students interested in transferring to a four-year college or university with a major in Art are encouraged to pursue the Associate in Arts Degrees for Transfer (AA-T) in Art History or Studio Art. A total of 60 hours are required to earn an associate in arts. To be eligible for an associate in arts degree, a student must earn a minimum of the last 16 credits at Trine University. Two associate degrees may be received at the same time provided all requirements for both degrees have been met, and the student has earned a minimum of 16 credit hours more than the degree with the lower minimum hour requirement.
