21 Arts Associate Programs

The Art Department offers both an Associate in Arts Degree. Various required and elective courses focus on individual creative development and provide a broad range of classroom and studio experiences. Art courses fulfill requirements for transfer or prepare students for careers requiring competency in visual media.

The Associate of Arts General Studies Degree is appropriate for students whose primary goal is to earn a two-year college degree. It may be suitable for you if you wish to apply for credit by challenge, independent study, CLEP, professional/technical, or military programs to courses not included in the Direct Transfer Agreement (DTA) where applicable.

San Jose City College offers both an Associate in Arts (AA) and Associate in Science (AS) in Art degree. Students planning to follow a transfer pattern should use the Associate in Arts degree. This degree may not transfer to all universities, and students need to inquire of the universities if they have a bachelors degree for their upper division course work. The Associate in Science has 2 possible areas of emphasis: Drawing and Painting or Photography. A minimum of 3 courses in the Art major must be taken at San Jose City College. A grade of "C" or better is required in each course in the major and area of emphasis for graduation.

The Art Department at Laney College offers a wide variety of courses in both fine and applied art to meet student goals ranging from personal interest to prepare for transfer to four-year institutions or professional art schools.

The Liberal Arts Degree: Arts and Humanities is a group of courses emphasizing the human condition — its limits, potential and creative expressions — through the study of cultural, literary, and artistic expression of human beings.

The Associate of Arts Direct Transfer Agreement (AA-DTA) degree is designed to transfer to four-year colleges and universities in Washington state. This degree provides students priority consideration in admissions for most humanities and social science majors at public universities (ahead of students without a degree).

The Art Department is committed to the value of the arts to all academic studies and offers courses for both majors and non-majors. Students who intend to transfer should be aware that they may be required to present a portfolio of work. Your advisor can provide guidance for you to prepare the portfolio. Students who take courses in the department have the opportunity for their work to be featured in the Skagit Valley College Annual Juried Student Exhibition. Students can also receive credit for working with arts programs and organizations in the community.

The Associate Degree program in Art is designed for students intending to enter the fields of design, illustration, art history, and art education. The program offers two state-approved degrees: 1) Ceramics, and 2) Drawing and Painting. The program also offers coursework in Computer Graphics/Multimedia and Students interested in transferring to a four-year college or university with a major in Art are encouraged to pursue the Associate in Arts Degrees for Transfer (AA-T) in Art History or Studio Art. Consult the Counseling Office for individualized educational planning and the Transfer Center for complete information regarding transfer requirements.

A total of 60 hours are required to earn an associate in arts. To be eligible for an associate in arts degree, a student must earn a minimum of the last 16 credits at Trine University. Two associate degrees may be received at the same time provided all requirements for both degrees have been met, and the student has earned a minimum of 16 credit hours more than the degree with the lower minimum hour requirement.

The Art program is dedicated to the creative and personal growth of every student. The courses are designed to give students a solid foundation in the elements and principles of design that will prepare them for more advanced studies. Our program establishes students with a strong understanding of realism before introducing more abstract and conceptual forms of art.

At Salzburg College, the Associate in Arts program is a 16-month course of study that covers the core materials needed to complete the first two years of a four-year bachelor's degree. An A.A. degree is the credential earned when a student has successfully completed a two-year course of study.
