Description: Covers the basic concepts and principles of accounting, along with the introduction and usage of account terminology.

Our Academic Director/ Controller is an active CPA with over 40 years’ experience. He recognized the need for an accounting program focused on applied skills to prepare students for a successful career in the field. Our intensive degree program in accounting provides a fundamental understanding of accounting principles and practices and how to utilize computer applications to perform accounting tasks. This program provides working knowledge and the skills to perform accounting tasks at different stages of a complete accounting cycle. Students compare and contrast different types of business entities and learn how to treat them differently, prepare various payroll and income tax returns, and effectively utilize computer applications to carry out accounting duties. Students learn various accounting and tax software.

At Roanoke, an accounting concentration makes you aware of how you can maintain accurate, up-to-date financial business practices.

The Accounting program provides the educational background and training required for entry positions in private business and industry, governmental agencies and public accounting firms.

Accounting internships are offered freshman year to help JWCC students gain experience and determine the areas of most interest in this in-demand career.

Accounting graduates advise and assist management in controlling a business's financial operations and planning for its growth. They prepare accounting entries from source documents and post and summarize that information into meaningful financial statements.

This program is designed to provide the education and skill development to prepare the students for entry-level employment in accounting or bookkeeping, or to provide supplemental training for persons previously or currently employed in these areas. The knowledge and training acquired in this program can also be applied to many other managerial or supervisory positions in business and government. Students should consult a business adviser when choosing electives.
