The bachelor of arts (BA) in American studies offers students the opportunity to examine American history, culture, and social life within an interdisciplinary framework. This approach, drawing on faculty members in English, art and art history, political science, religion and classics, music, anthropology, philosophy, history, film and media studies, and modern languages and cultures, allows for especially rich explorations topics.

The minor in American Studies will require students to take courses from at least 3 different disciplines represented within the American Studies program. It will allow students to focus on a specific period or issue in American Studies (for instance, Early American History, Literature, and Culture or Cultural Diversity in American Studies), or to simply draw from the full range of courses in the program.

Bachelor of Arts in American Studies is an interdisciplinary liberal arts program. Courses in the program examine the history and culture of the United States, social and economic structure, forms of cultural expression, and political and legal institutions. These courses integrate history, sociology, literature, and media studies and are designed to encourage the development of critical thinking, debate and clear expository writing.

The Centre for Latin American and Caribbean Studies (CLACS), based at the Institute of Languages, Cultures and Societies, offers specialist doctoral supervision across the humanities and social sciences, covering Latin America and the Caribbean.

The program is designed for all students who want to deepen their understanding of African Americans by studying their earlier history in Africa, their transition to the New World, and their diasporic experiences in the Americas.

The Program in American Sign Language at Rochester offers a major, minor, and several clusters in the humanities academic division. Our program prepares students for a variety of professions such as education, medicine, law, Deaf education, sign language interpreting, research, counseling, program administration, or community service.
