Our MA in American Studies offers a comprehensive overview of the field at the graduate level. Students are required to take core courses in the different subfields of American Studies and in related areas such as cultural studies and cultural history, the social sciences and research methodologies, historical linguistics, popular and visual culture, etc. All these pave the way for the individual research students are required to undertake for their thesis in North American literature and literary studies in an interdisciplinary manner. The thesis supervised by our colleagues at the Institute of English Studies is to be handed in in the fourth semester and defended in order to earn an MA in American Studies.

With its literary and cultural studies orientation, this program offers students the opportunity to explore traditions and diversifications of Anglophone literatures, cultures, languages in depth – with a special focus on American literature, culture, and language. By comparing the three countries, the study of English in a Franco-German context opens up a new dimension of interculturality and transnationality. The master's thesis will be written in collaboration with classes on literary theory in Dijon.

The 2-year MA program in English and American Studies at the University of Turin is a graduate program in the humanities focusing on English and North American language/linguistics, literatures and cultures, analysed in an interdisciplinary and comparative perspective.

Students with a BA in humanities or social sciences and C1-level English can apply to the two- or four-semester English and American Studies programme at the University of Pannonia. American Studies examines the American experience from the colonial period of the United States to the present. Students will study, interpret, and evaluate events, cultural products, and trends in American economic, political, and social history as well as in American architecture, art, literature, music, and religion, and they will evaluate questions to which there are multiple plausible interpretations. Students pursuing the program in American Studies will enhance their skills in critical thinking and both oral and written communication. The American Studies program prepares students for further study in English/literature, history, political science, and sociology at a four-year baccalaureate institution and provides an excellent foundation for students interested in administration, communications, law, public service, and teaching.

Welcome to Mexican/Latin American Studies! We are an area of focus within the Ethnic Studies Department at Laney College and are rooted in the rich legacy of students committed to transformative education and social justice.

The African American Studies program prepares students with the comprehensive knowledge base, critical skills and social consciousness necessary to function as effective leaders in an increasingly globalized and diverse society. Our program is grounded in the decolonization and liberation projects of African Americans and their allies in the civil rights, gender, and sexual liberation movements of the 1960s that continue through the present in new forms that address new conditions. The aim of African American Studies is to support students in developing a critical consciousness and an understanding of social, political, cultural, and economic forces that have shaped the histories and current day realities of African Americans. Our studies are grounded in the principles of social justice and self-determination of oppressed communities. This program centralizes the knowledges, epistemologies and critical thinking produced by racially and sexually oppressed subjects, and we endeavor to examine the entangled intersectionality of racialized sexuality, gender, and class in complex socio- historical processes.

The master’s programme in North American Studies at Leiden University takes a multidisciplinary approach to the study of the United States, with a particular emphasis on examining key aspects of American history, culture, and literature.

The program in English and American Studies was founded at our university in 1993.

Interdisciplinary Studies (IDS) is a broad-based, liberal arts and sciences major that focuses on developing exemplary skills in written and oral communication, textual analysis, critical thinking, research methods, and the ability to bring a wide range of resources to bear in approaching complex problems. Because it combines knowledge systems across the meta-disciplines of the Humanities, Social Sciences, and Natural Sciences, an IDS major is great preparation for both the workplace and for entry into graduate or professional schools. IDS is part of a national network of Programs for Accelerated College Education (PACE) that are designed for working, adult students who want to earn a bachelor’s degree in a reasonable period of time while they maintain a full-time job. While all admitted students are welcome, IDS/PACE students are primarily transfers who enter CSUDH with 60 units and junior-class standing.

The robust presence of the United States throughout the world, well observable in the contexts of politics, economy, and culture, calls for a body of experts who – aside from having excellent English language skills – have a specialised knowledge in the history, politics, society, culture, language, and literature of the United States. With this aim in mind, the American Studies MA program seeks to impart its graduates with the necessary theoretical knowledge and practical skills that can be fruitfully utilized in both private and public sector establishments interested in the communication and/or representation of American values and interests.
