14 Advanced Certificate Degree Programs in Canada

The Millwright Foundation Program consists of 24 weeks of foundation training and a 3 week (90 hour) practicum requirement and will provide the skills required for students to obtain level 1 technical training.

Students who complete the Welder Foundation program will receive Levels 1 and 2 technical training and 300 work-based hours credit toward completing their Welder Apprenticeship. Certified welders will qualify to test for Pressure Welding IT Procedure tests administered by Technical Safety BC (TSBC).

The Health Care Assistant (HCA) program is designed to provide students with opportunities to develop the knowledge, skills, and attitudes necessary to function effectively as front-line caregivers and respected members of the healthcare team. Under the direction and supervision of a regulated health professional, graduates provide person-centred care aimed at promoting and maintaining the physical, psychological, cognitive, social, and spiritual health and well-being of clients and families.

This program consists of the SkilledTrades – Heavy Mechanical Trades – Foundation training and a 2-week, mandatory work experience placement. There are four mechanical trades paths introduced in this program.

The Professional Cook program follows the Skilled Trades BC prescribed course curriculum for institutional entry to Professional Cook 1. Students will perform all phases of kitchen activities, including the preparation and presentation of vegetables, soups, sauces, meat, fish, and poultry; cold kitchen items; desserts, baking, pastry, basic menu planning/costing, as well as knowledge of safety, sanitation, and food storage.

Specialize further after completing the Office Assistant Certificate. This advanced certificate covers the numeracy skills needed by bookkeepers, accounting clerks, and various similar positions. Advanced Bookkeeping students also complete a two-week practicum for a hands-on opportunity to apply skills and knowledge acquired in a workplace environment.

The Indigenous Protected and Conserved Areas (IPCA) Planning Advanced Certificate addresses the need for a comprehensive and holistic program relating to the protection and conservation of the lands and waters across Canada, and contributes to the development of a network of IPCA certified professionals who will play a critical role in Canada’s achievement of the “30% by 2030” goal.

The Administrative Assistant Advanced Certificate at Selkirk College is designed to enhance the skills and knowledge required for advanced administrative roles. The program focuses on developing proficiency in office software, communication, organization, and management skills. Students learn about advanced office procedures, project management, and other specialized administrative functions.

Develop skills to directly apply to your career including management communications, marketing writing and visual communication. The Advanced Certificate in Communication provides students with skills in applied communications. Students develop competence in areas such as professional writing, public relations theory and practice, management communications, marketing writing, and visual communication. Completion of the program will provide students with a valuable skill-set, applicable to every potential career. The certificate will be of interest to students who are looking to complement their previous post-secondary experience by focusing on an applied, career-related field.

The Advanced Certificate in Return to Work is targeted at professionals who already have an undergraduate degree in a field other than disability management and some work experience related to workplace health science. It offers qualified applicants who wish to achieve a specialized academic credential in the field of return to work with an opportunity to obtain a credential in this area. The Advanced Certificate is offered at the undergraduate level and provides students with an understanding of the required conceptual frameworks and their application to return to work. It equips them with the knowledge, skills and attitudes to enable them to work within the specific area of return to work for ill or injured workers.
