English Language A level is a challenging academic course which is respected by universities. It enables you to look under the surface of language and to see how meaning is often conveyed in ways that are not explicit. It is a subject that matches up well with other humanities subjects.

Students may study a pre-1914 poetry anthology and creative writing in both spoken and written modes for Paper 1. To enable this, students study methods of language analysis including how language sounds, grammatical structures, the choice of words and the assumptions speakers, writers, listeners and readers make.

This course is ideal for learners who have studied the language at GCSE or have family living in France. The course will build learners’ confidence and enhance language skills in speaking, listening, reading and writing. Topics include the changing nature of the family, music and cinema in the French speaking world and aspects of French political life and society. You could complement your studies with enrichment activities including the French club or the Culture society.

This course is ideal for learners who are interested in the ways that language is used and how language develops. Students will look at topics such as how language varies depending on mode, field, function and audience; and how language choices can create personal identities. You could complement your studies with enrichment activities including work experience or Creative Writing society.

An A or A* at Latin is desirable with a B as a minimum as the jump from GCSE to A level is considerable. You will also need an interest in literature, history and politics. The study of Latin has long been a respected part of an education and it develops a wide range of skills. In order to master the complex grammar, you will have to develop a logical mind.

The German A level will introduce you to real German in real situations. You will develop the knowledge and skills to enable you to step inside another culture and enjoy the long and rich history of German art, literature and cinema.

The French A level will introduce you to French society, history and culture. You will read the French press, listen to the French news and watch French films so as to develop your knowledge not just of the language, but of the countries where it is spoken.

The Italian A level will introduce you to Italian society, history and culture. You will read the Italian press, listen to the Italian news and watch Italian films so as to develop your knowledge not just of the language, but of the country where it is spoken.
