A Level Biology A offers an exciting, context-based approach to learning about the natural world. This course has been designed to motivate students by helping them realise how an understanding of many of today’s contemporary issues require the knowledge and understanding of underpinning biological principles

A level biology is the study of life itself. The course explores the theories and principles involved in all living systems. Topics you will learn about include: lifestyle, transport, genes and health, development, plants and the environment, the natural environment and species survival, energy, exercise and co-ordination, as well as practical biology and research skills. The course will provide you with the chance to gain a solid understanding of the principles of genetics, molecules, taxonomy, natural selection, evolutionary theory, global warming, bacteria, viruses, and more.

From the intricate molecular world inside our cells to how our body systems work and the dynamic interactions between organisms and their environment, A-level Biology is the study of life in all its rich complexity. A-level Biology encourages curiosity and develops scientific understanding, practical dexterity and mathematical problem-solving. This course covers the brand new spec introduced in September 2015. Biology is the natural science concerned with the study of life and living organisms, including their structure, function, growth, origin, evolution, distribution, and taxonomy.

This A Level is included within the following A Level pathways as a recommended core subject: Environment, Geography and Earth Science; Medical Health; STEM and Healthcare. It is included in the following pathways as a recommeded additional subject: Creative Studies; Maths, Physics and Computer Science; Social Sciences. However, you can take Biology with any A Level/equivalent combination, there is plenty of choice and flexibility.

In this qualification you will learn about a wide range of biological concepts and techniques, including cellular structure and function, biodiversity, health and diseases, natural selection and speciation, genetics, biochemistry of respiration and photosynthesis. Practical work is central to any study of biology, for this reason the course includes 18 core practicals which link your theoretical knowledge and understanding to practical scenarios.
