University and College courses in trains and railways range from shorter vocational and diploma programs to degrees at bachelor, master and PhD level. The probably most common area of study is Railway engineering at all different levels. Further you can also study railway technology and courses within for example railway studies and history.

Railway Engineering

Railway engineers are responsible for upgrading, renewing and maintaining the world’s railway tracks and trains to allow for technological advances, faster trains and safer transports. Trains have become known as an environmentally friendly form of transport, making it a popular area for future development.

Railway engineering can be studied as a diploma or vocational degree as well as bachelor degrees. For experienced engineers, there is also the option of continuing with a master degree. At this level, students are often sponsored by their employers. Railway engineers study basic engineering and mathematical courses as well as signal engineering, electrical and mechanical engineering and track engineering to name a few. The vocationally oriented courses often include a relatively large industry placement component.

Railway Studies and Transport History

The area of railway and train studies has a historical focus, and studies the development of railways and transport from a social, cultural, political, economic and technological point of view. Such a degree primarily qualifies you for work within the museum or academics. It also opens up to an area of further research for those with ambitions toward a Doctorate or lecturing position in the academic world.
