Teaching/Pedagogics

Teaching is a field that requires a lot from those who choose to persue it as a career. Although job prospects are generally good, this depends on the area of teaching you choose to go into, which subject/subjects and where you wish to work. It is generally more difficult to find employment within such fields as general elementary school teaching, physical education and social studies as these are most popular. The location and quality of the school will also have an effect on how easy or difficult it is to receive the job you wish for.

More about Teaching/Pedagogics

There are many different routes into teaching. Although some choose to pursue a teaching career from the start of their educational path, others only discover after holding other positions that teaching is what they would really like to be doing. Depending on your background, how you reach the position of teacher is up to you.

A Career in Teaching and Pedagogics

The role of a teacher is generally a very varied one. It does not only require a good knowledge of the subjects you teach. Teachers must also have the ability to communicate, inspire trust and confidence, and motivate students. An understanding of the students' emotional and educational needs in respect to their individual background and cultural heritage is also very important. A teacher will also benefit from being organized, dependable, patient and creative. The day of a teacher can look very different, depending on where you end up teaching, and which age groups. Different schools organize their teaching differently, and public schools in poor areas usually have more problems with a low motivation of the students, and run down facilities with large classes. Such circumstances can make teaching much more challenging and stressful, than it may be in a smaller private school where students are admitted selectively and classes are smaller.

Studying for a Teaching Degree

In order to teach in most public schools around the world, you will require some kind of teaching certificate. This is usually acquired through a teaching degree of some sort - either a bachelor of teaching, or a completion course. These completion courses often grant you a Master's degree to compliment a previous Bachelor with the knowledge of pedagogics and teaching. Such complimenting courses often involve a certain amount of practical learning, in order to better prepare you for your future teaching career. Private schools are generally more lenient with the requirements of holding a certificate, although it is usually regarded as a benefit. A teaching degree can generally be gained anywhere in the world. Some schools will require you to complete one or more years of your subject degree before applying to do the teaching degree. If you wish to complete an already obtained degree in for example International Relations or History with one in teaching, it is usually possible to apply for such a certification course internationally. However, it is best to keep in mind that the teaching certification is not always easily transferrable from one country to another. Therefore, if you know for instance, that you really wish to teach in the United States, it may be advisable to complete a teaching degree there.
