If you are only planning on spending one semester in Argentina, then you won't need a visa if your passport is from a visa-exempt country. Stays of up to three months don't require visas, even if you're studying rather than strictly being a tourist.

However, you will need a visa if you intend to stay for longer than ninety days.

Here is how to apply for an Argentinian study visa:

  • Gather together your documents:
    • Passport (this must be valid for six months after the end of your studies)
    • Photocopy of each page of your passport
    • Two photographs
    • Letter of acceptance from an Argentinian school
    • Criminal background check
    • Receipt of visa fee payment (this varies, but is generally around $100 paid in cash)
    • Birth certificate
    • Proof of finances for living costs
    • Proof of proficiency in the language of study
  • If your documents aren't in Spanish, then you must get a notarized translation.

At this point, you will then arrive in Argentina as a tourist. You must then visit the Immigration Office in Retiro to convert your tourist entry into a study visa. Your immigration officer will then look through your documents. If they're approved, then you'll get a Preliminary Certificate of Residence. This legally permits you to stay in Argentina.

Twenty days later, you'll need to return with your Preliminary Certificate of Residence and exchange this for your study permit.

Study permits are not valid for the duration of your studies. They are, at most, valid for six months. This process will need to be repeated in full at least twice a year throughout your entire time in Argentina. Similarly, if you intend to study in Argentina for more than one calendar year, you will need to leave the country after two application cycles before reentering as a tourist and starting a third cycle.
