Ireland inherited its higher education system from the UK when it gained independence in 1922. In the decades since, Ireland has made only minor changes to the system. Today, there are seven universities in Ireland. Bachelor’s degrees normally take three or four years to complete. Postgraduate degrees normally take one year and doctoral studies normally take between three and five years.

Postgraduate degrees normally take one year and doctoral studies normally take between three and five years, depending on whether or not you teach whilst researching. There are also plenty of opportunities for post-doctoral studies, particularly at Ireland’s oldest and most prestigious university: Trinity College Dublin.

Ireland’s grading system is also unusual. It is used in only Ireland and the UK. Overall, a student must achieve an average of 40% to pass, 50% to have honors awarded with their degree and 70% to achieve a 1:1, the highest grade. But it’s notoriously difficult to get just 60%. So don’t expect to achieve upwards of 95% on your assignments throughout your studies.

Unless you are specifically studying the Irish language, most degree courses are taught entirely in English. As for how you study, it’s a mixture of classes and independent study.
