The Council for Higher Education (CHE) is the responsible legal body that deals with all matters of higher education in Israel and oversees accreditations and the awarding of academic degrees. There are 59 higher education institutions throughout Israel: 9 research universities and the Open University of Israel, 29 academic colleges (20 of which are public and 9 private), and 20 teacher-training colleges.

The recognized academic degrees in Israel are bachelor’s, master’s, and PhDs. While all institutions offer bachelor’s and master’s degree programs, only research universities can currently offer PhDs.

  • An undergraduate degree takes 3 to 4 years depending on the field of study and requires between 120 and 160 credits.
  • A standard master’s degree takes 2 years and consists of 28 to 36 months. Several master’s programs in English are offered in 3 semesters (over 1 full year)
  • A standard doctoral degree takes on average 5 years depending on the institution’s requirements.

Placed at number 10 in the world for the number of citations per academic papers (from all disciplines), Israel is a great promoter of research, and partners up with many institutions around the world which offer funding opportunities for international collaborations. There is also a range of programs with internship opportunities to expose students to various sectors in Israel, such as hi-tech, business, consulting, governmental, non-profit, and more!

Among the most known of Israeli higher education institutions are the Weizmann Institute of Science, the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, the University of HaifaTechnion – Israel Institute of Technology, and Tel Aviv University, all within the top 100 universities of the world!
