Study in Azerbaijan: Student Visas & Permits

Once fairly isolationist towards any passport that wasn’t either Russian, Georgian or Iranian, Azerbaijan has opened itself up to the world over the last decade. Today, nationals of the EU, the EEA and Switzerland, with the exception of Ireland, only need an e-visa to enter Azerbaijan. Citizens of the US, Canada, Russia, China and India also enjoy easy access.

It is important to note, however, that Armenian nationals are barred from entering. Anyone of Armenian descent, even if they’re travelling on another passport, are also barred, as is anyone who has evidence of travel to Armenia in their passport.

The conflict with Armenia aside, Azerbaijan is generally welcoming of international students - and this visa process reflects this. It’s fairly standard and uncomplicated. Students are issued with a temporary residency permit alongside their study visa. This permit is valid for the duration of your studies.

To get a visa and permit, you’ll need to visit your nearest Azeri embassy, consulate or visa center. You’ll need to provide seven pieces of evidence.

  • Two passport photos
  • Medical certificate (showing that you’re fit and healthy) and medical insurance
  • Your passport and a photocopy of the ID pages
  • Completed visa application form
  • A notarized tenancy agreement
  • A copy of your landlord’s application to the State Migration Service in Baku
  • A copy of your landlord’s ID proving them to be an Azeri citizen

Getting this paperwork together isn’t as hard as it sounds. Your school can help you find a place to rent and to get the Azerbaijani-language paperwork together. Your school will act as your sponsor when Azerbaijan assesses your visa application.

Fees vary greatly depending on your passport and residency status. Check with your local embassy, consulate or visa center to see what the latest fees are. As for processing time, it can take anywhere between fourteen and forty days as all applications must be handled by the State Migration Service in Baku directly.

As lengthy as this process can be, your visa and permit are yours for the duration of your studies in Azerbaijan.
