More about France

France Paris educationsFrench education institutions are known for their quality and accessibility to all. Most schools in France are public; however there are a small percentage of private schools, many of which are controlled by the church. Higher education is divided into two categories:

  • Grandes écoles: specialist schools which are selective in the students they accept
  • Public universities: schools which accept all students who have a baccalaureate (international schooling qualification) or a specific foundation course

The Grandes écoles schools in France usually focus on one education subject in which students can specialize. They are known to be prestigious education institutions, and have produced many of France’s finest executives and scientists. These schools accept several hundred students each year, many of whom are international students. Students in these schools are expected to complete rigorous education curriculums, which include many hours of study and regular oral examinations with professors. There is a 2-year preparatory education course for the Grandes écoles, which prepares students for entrance examinations.

Studies at public universities can last for up to 4 years. Short-term studies go on for 2 years and prepare students for a specialist field. Long-term schooling is divided into 3 cycles: 3 years toward a Licence (like many undergraduate degrees); another 2 years toward earning a Master degree; and a 6th year toward a PhD, ultimately leading to a doctorate.

The Bologna System

The education system in France has previously been somewhat complex for students to qualify for, gain admission into, and get financial aid for schools, but is improving by means of implementing the Bologna System. This education agreement, signed by 29 European countries, aims to create universal schooling standards across the continent, making educations more comparable. The schooling reform allows students to more easily transfer between schools and improves the overall quality of European higher education.

Language in France

The official language of France is French. It is beneficial for international students who study in French universities, or other school in France, to have some knowledge of the French language before arrival, but education courses are available for those who do not.

Cost of Education in France

Tuition costs for higher education study in France are nonexistent or very low because schooling is primarily funded by the state. Some Grandes écoles education courses charge tuition fees between €5,000 and €10,000 per year. If students do not have the financial means to pay an education fee, they can apply for scholarships or loans, and may also receive monthly stipends for living expenses.

Pursuing an education in France is a challenging, yet highly satisfying experience with a broad range of quality universities and Grandes écoles schools available for international students.
