More about Australia

Australia education 12 ApostlesAs the most economically developed country in the region, Australia is a popular study destination for students from Asia and beyond. Australia takes a very ‘western’ approach to its political, cultural and educational philosophies. In the Programme for International Student Assessment, Australia regularly scores among the top five of thirty major developed countries.

The Australian education system offers two types of higher educational institutions:

  • Australian Universities:

Each of Australia’s 38 universities offers a wide variety of quality courses. Students can study both undergraduate programmes to obtain a Bachelors degree or Diploma or postgraduate studies for a Masters degree or PhD. Many Australian universities also offer exchange programmes or summer courses to international students.

The majority of Australian universities receive government funding. This has helped to establish a well-respected and highly sought-after system of higher education, and a high ratio of international to local students in tertiary education.

  • Australian vocational and technical institutes:

A vocational and technical education provides career-focused skills that are valued and sought after by employers. These education programs fall under a state-based system of vocational training known as TAFE (Technical and Further Education) Institutes. The program allows students to go straight into a job once they have finished their qualification. When students successfully complete a vocational or technical program, they typically gain a Diploma, which can qualify them for a university degree program. The combination of public funding and variety of quality educational institutes within this program has helped approximately 58% of Australians aged from 25 to 64 earn vocational or tertiary qualifications.

Cost of Education

The costs of studying in Australia depend on the specific educational institutes, and are usually very reasonable for the high-quality of education offered. In addition, living expenses are not high considering Australia has one of the highest living standards in the world. Students can plan to spend about $360 per week on accommodation, food, and other expenses.

Popular Educational Courses in Australia

Due to its geographic location, Australia is a popular study destination for international students from non-English speaking nations. The official language of Australia is English, and there are a wide variety of English language courses available at all levels of study. Students can take summer courses to learn English as a part of their holiday, or as part of a formal course in preparation for accredited levels of English language.

Business and Management courses are also well-represented in Australian institutions. All manners of Bachelors and Masters business related courses exist, as well as MBA programmes. It is advisable to pursue a subject of study that interests you, as opposed to choosing an education course based on Australia’s Skilled Occupations List (SOL) in an effort to migrate to the country upon graduation. The student visa process is separate from skilled migration, and professions on the SOL list change over time.

Education in Australia is a unique opportunity to pursue studies at some of the world’s top universities and other schools in a beautiful, friendly country.
