Science

What defines a science degree is difficult to generalize. A Bachelor of Science varies across borders and between schools to include most disciplines and degrees of specialization. And although most of Europe is now starting to come together in the Ba/Ma system differences still exist. Your career options with a science degree are as wide open as the discipline. Some remain within their field of specialization, while more end up in more or less unrelated fields. Even so, most still find that their science degree comes into good use.

More about Science

A science degree opens up to a wide area of possibilities for your future. What a Bachelor of Science entails is not a given, and differs from place to place and school to school. What you can be sure of however, is that your degree will come to good use in the future, almost irrespective of what you choose to continue with. Options range from higher degrees in just about any field, to research and doctorates. Many also continue directly into careers in sales, research or business to name but a few. Really, only your goals and dreams set the limits of where you can go.

Careers after a Science Degree

Careers for science majors vary as much as within any so varied degree category. Science degree holders are often considered both intelligent and easily adaptable to other fields. Their diligence and hard working nature are also makes them suitable for most careers, as the degree equips you with many skills. Among them are how to learn quickly and adapt to situations. Even though many science degree holders end up working outside their specific field, most report that the knowledge gained in their degree is important to their job. Many science majors also go on to further study in other fields such as business or law. In fact only a very small portion of those with Bachelor's degrees in a science field go on to do PhDs, although this is naturally an option.

Studying for a Science Degree

Studying for a science degree can mean very different things depending on where in the world you choose to do your degree. What defines a science degree can even vary between schools in the same country. Generally, in the United States, a Bachelor of Science degree is a specialized version of a B.A, where the student has focused more on one specific subject than is common in a liberal arts degree. It is also common for vocational areas of study such as journalism or engineering to be given a B.Sc degree. In the UK and Canada, the definition of a science varies once again. Here commonly also between schools. One institution may well award a BA in Economics, while the other considers this a BSc degree. Some schools also award a BSc no matter what you choose to study, even if the major subject would traditionally be considered to lie within the field of the arts. These differences are usually based on history and tradition, rather than more substantial elements. What is required to be awarded a Bachelor of Science is further different across the globe. In Germany the B.Sc. was equivalent to a B.Sc. Honours degree, normally awarded in four years instead of three. The German system along with many others in Europe are now changing their systems into the Ba/Ma system. This is in order to make degrees more compatible and versatile across borders. It may good to be aware that the time required to earn your B.Sc. can vary from three to five years, depending on where you choose to study. Taking this into consideration, it is always advisable to research carefully before choosing your final destination. Receiving you education is not only a large investment in time and money, but also an important opportunity in your life.
