More about Political Science

A degree in political science can lead you on to a wide variety of careers. Many of these will deal with politics in some way. Politics could be said to deal with questions concerning the organization and government of society. Many political science graduates go on to further study in for example law and later work with reviewing legislation proposal, and studying their potential impact on society.

Studying Political Science

Undergraduate courses and programs in political science and its derivatives such as international relations are available at most universities around the world. The term political science is widely used in the United States, whereas in other places, the field may more commonly go under the name of politics, political studies or government. Many schools also offer the opportunity of doing a master degree or PhD study if you are looking to deepen or widen your knowledge. For an international focus on political science, it is a good idea to look into the option of studying abroad. This gives you a better view of the world around you and a different perspective, popular with many employers. For information on how to go about applying to schools etc, it is usually best to contact the school in question directly. They will in turn also be able to advise you on immigration procedures and financing, which are issues you will face as an international student.

Careers in Political Science

A degree in political science can lead you into careers in research, academia, civil services and diplomacy, international relations, politics, publishing, political journalism or lobbying to name but a few. All these careers make use of the qualities developed during your studies, such as the ability to research and analyze information from different sources, problem solving skills and strong written and verbal communication skills. These can also be relevant for work within international organizations, NGOs, consultancies and think tanks. Many Political Science graduates continue on to further study in law or communication.

Political Science for the Future?

At the moment there seems to be an excess of those aiming for political science careers, and it will take time for the balance of demand and supply to return. This may differ in some places, such as the United States where political research is especially active, and within international business where an understanding of international relations is growing in value. Competition is generally tough, and specialist knowledge and higher level degrees greatly increase your chances of relevant employment. Language skills are also valued very highly.
