Warsaw is also known as the Phoenix city, in reference to the extensive damage it sustained in WW2 and the manner in which it was re-built so enthusiastically by its citizens, a testament to the spirit and resourcefulness of the Polish population.
The country has had a turbulent past; divided between Austria, Prussia and Russia until 1918 when it regained its independence, only to be overrun by Germany and the Soviet Union in World War 2. In 1990 communist rule was overturned and what is referred to as the Third Polish Republic emerged. Since then Poland has gone from strength to strength.
