Japan is a country with many densely populated cities, a very distinct culture and a rich history. In addition, Japan has a very high percentage of highly educated people, with over 48% of students continuing on to university and junior college education. This figure is indicative of high standard of education in Japan. Many universities and junior colleges are well equipped with fine research, computer, and library facilities and enable students to carry out their research in an excellent environment.

Japanese Educational system

Studying in Japan is definitely an investment in your career in contacts, experience and not least the knowledge of the Japanese language. If you are considering studying in Japan, there are many different ways to go about it. Regardless of the course you choose, from Japanese-language training to postgraduate studies, you will come in touch with Japanese culture and lifestyles that will prove to be an invaluable experience for you. Foreign students can enroll in one of five types of institutions of higher learning:

Universities (undergraduate courses)
There are about 700 universities in Japan, including national, public and private. The length of study in an undergraduate university is four years with the exception of medicine, dentistry and veterinary science department, which require six years of study. Graduate schools
Graduate schools in Japan offer both master and doctorate/PhD programs. The length of your study will be determined by which of these you choose to engage in. Master program: lasts for two years. Junior colleges
The length of study at a Japanese junior college is between two years and three years depending on the department. Most of the departments are related to home economics, humanities, education and sociology.

Special training colleges (post-secondary courses)
Special training schools that offer post secondary courses are called special training colleges. Such schools are positioned as higher educational institutions in Japan. They provide vocational education as well as education in the skills, technology and knowledge needed in life. The length of study is one year or more, but most courses are two years in length.

Colleges of technology
Colleges of technology provide junior high school graduates with five years (five and a half years for merchant shipping courses) of education. There are about 60 colleges of technology in Japan. Requirements for studying in Japan

Besides a secondary school diploma equivalent to Japanese requirements, studying at higher education institutions in Japan generally also requires a good grasp of the Japanese language.  This is why many foreign students in Japan, start their academic career with one to two years of study at a Japanese language institute.
