Distance learning dates back to the 1700s through short hand courses advertised in the newspaper. By the early 1900s, a number of universities around the world had established distance-learning degrees with correspondence sent by way of the postal service.

Today, online education is becoming increasingly popular as new technological advances are made and societies change. Because peoples’ lifestyles alter under various circumstances, it is beneficial to maintain a means of higher education. Students may be physically unable to attend an education course, or may choose not to as a matter of convenience. The flexibility of online education allows students to take courses from work, home, or anywhere else they may be.

There are two types distance learning available through online technology:

• Synchronous: this technology mode requires all students to be “present,” or online at the same time in order to participate in a virtual classroom-type program. Technologies used through this mode include web conferencing, live streaming, web-based VoIP, and direct-broadcast satellite; and
• Asynchronous: this technology mode consists of message board forums, recorded video, print materials, and e-mail; students are able to access the materials for the education course on their own time, regardless of what other classmates are doing.

Students can also participate in an online education course through CD-ROMs, online tutoring, or broadcast. Many distance-learning institutions go by the honor system in regards to cheating due to lack of supervision, but students may be required to complete their exams in a controlled setting.

One advantage of distancing learning is that it provides a cheaper alternative to traditional schooling, as infrastructure costs do not exist. It is an excellent opportunity to educate children who live in under-served areas and do not have a school which they can physically attend. Distance learning can also be a challenge in that the student is in control and must have the discipline to schedule time devoted to their studies. If timing is up to the student, it may be easy to postpone, making the education less effective.
