The Czech Republic is a central European country with a population of approximately 10.5 million inhabitants. The country’s largest city and capital, Prague (Praha), sits on the River Vltava in central Bohemia. The city is a popular tourist destination on account of its 1992 addition to the UNESCO list of World Heritage Sites.
The Czech Republic lies in the very heart of Europe, land-locked between Poland, Germany, Austria and Slovakia. Its predecessor Czechoslovakia was founded in 1918 after the collapse of the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy, only to be assimilated by the Soviet communistic regime. With the collapse of Soviet authority in 1989, Czechoslovakia regained its freedom through the peaceful Velvet Revolution.
