

Switzerland
Switzerland is landlocked by France, Germany, Liechtenstein, Austria and Italy and within reach to any major European city in two hours or less.
With its 380,000 population Zurich is the business hub of Switzerland and one of its three main financial centres. Bern (129,000 inhabitants) is the political capital; Basel (160,000 inhabitants) is home to renowned pharmaceutical and chemical companies; and Geneva (186,000 inhabitants) is the headquarters of numerous international organizations.
Switzerland has four national languages, with 65% of the population speaking Swiss German, 22% speaking French; 12% Italian, and 1% Romantsch, which is a minority language spoken only in Canton Grisons. The population is rather small, with a total of almost 8 million inhabitants.
Switzerland's famous mountain ranges largely determine the variety of local and regional microclimates. In the south, Ticino enjoys a hot, Mediterranean climate, but the rest of the country mostly has a central European climate, with average temperatures typically in the low to mid-20°C in the summer, and between 2° and 6°C in winter.
Lugano, Switzerland
Lugano is located in the Italian speaking canton of Ticino, which is in the south of Switzerland, bordering Italy. The University of Lugano’s campus is within walking distance from the city centre and the beautiful Lugano Lake. The city offer a high quality of life in one of the most picturesque landscapes in Switzerland. With around 55,000 inhabitants Lugano is the ninth largest city in Switzerland.
Mendrisio, Switzerland
Mendrisio is also located in the Italian speaking canton of Ticino in Switzerland, but is situated 15 km south of Lugano, closer to the Italian border. Mendrisio is known for its extraordinary beauty and its historical centre and magnificent pre-alpine surroundings. The lively city has a pleasant atmosphere and is known as il magnifico borgo – the magnificent town.
Mendrisio and its surroundings offer a range of recreational activities, including musical performances (Musica nel Mendrisiotto), theatre performances (Cinema Teatro and Excelsior in Chiasso), museums (Museo d’Arte in Mendrisio, Pinacoteca Züst in Rancate and Museo Vela in Ligornetto), cinema (Mignon and Plaza), and a film club (Cineclub del Mendrisiotto).

The University of Lugano does not provide accommodation services, but have a platform where students can post messages about rooms and apartments to rent.
Students looking for an accommodation can also look at ads on newspapers, specialized magazines, real estate agencies (Swiss agencies usually provide information free of charge), announcement boards on campus, and obviously the Internet.
