Medicine & Veterinary Medicine: The University of Edinburgh is ranked first in Scotland, fourth in the UK and 21st in the world for biomedicine.

Science & Englineering: The University of Edinburgh is ranked first in Scotland, fourth in the UK for science and engineering and the university employs over 60% of the Scotland's leading scientists.

Humanities & Social Science:5* RAE grades were obtained in Islamic Studies, English Literature, German and Scandinavian Studies and Philosophy with Grade 5s in Linguistics, English Language, Psychology, Law, Anthropology, Sociology, Accounting, Asian Studies, Celtic Studies, French, Hispanic Studies, History and Divinity. The English Literature department is the oldest in the world (200 years old) and home to the James Tait Memorial Prize, the oldest UK literary prize.
