Description and information about accommodation The Hague

The Hague

Hague_University_of_Applied_Sciences_place

The Hague is a city of global stature, despite its relatively small size. As the home of the International Criminal Court, Peace Palace, War Crimes Tribunal and Europol, it’s rightly known as an International City of Peace, Justice and Security. It’s also the political capital of The Netherlands, and the home to our Royal family.

But it’s a city for day-to-day life, too, with the benefits of a big city – but a small town feel. You can wander the streets, soaking up all the wonderful historic architecture as you follow in the footsteps of Mondriaan and Vermeer. Or you can sit on the sandy beaches, soaking up the sun or gazing out over the water.

There are many things that you need to arrange when you decide to study abroad. Finding a place to live is obviously one of the most important things. The Hague University realises that it is difficult to arrange housing by yourself and has therefore developed procedures to arrange this for most of its international students.

Housing agency: DUWO

Each year many international students come to The Hague looking for a place to stay. In order to accommodate those students for whom it is impossible to find a room before arrival, The Hague University has signed a contract with a housing agency (DUWO) specialised in letting houses to students. Currrently The Hague University and DUWO supply more than 400 rooms to international students. There are five categories of students who are eligible for accommodation through The Hague University:

  • Non-EU students who have applied for a fulltime English bachelor programme, who are not living in the Netherlands when registering and who have applied for a provisional residence permit (entry-visa or MVV) and/or residence permit (VVR) through The Hague University;
  • EU students who have applied for a fulltime English bachelor programme through a representative or agent of The Hague University.  Plase visit The Hague University's website for a list of agents.
  • Students who have applied for a fulltime master programme of The Hague University;
  • Exchange students of The Hague University
  • Preparatory school students.

If you're a student mentioned above, you will receive information on how to apply for accommodation as part of the application procedure.

What can you expect?

Rooms in The Hague are not cheap, prices generally vary between €2,000 and €3,500 per semester. The rooms are single or double with communal facilities. More information about the accommodation that is offered via DUWO Short Stay Housing. Go to Short Stay Housing “When I’m a tenant”.

Although some rooms have more facilities than others, they are all suitable for a one-semester/ two-semester stay. All rooms are in The Hague and between 5 to 20 minutes from the university.   The rent includes gas, water, electricity and furniture. Internet connection is available in most rooms. The accommodations are standard rooms. Facilities such as telephone, microwaves/ovens, pressure-cookers, dishwashers, washing machines, tumble-dryers, baths, whirlpools, TV-sets, stereos and other luxury items are not included in the accommodation.

Find your own accommodation

Students who are not mentioned in the list above must find their own accommodation in The Hague. To assist them the International Office has developed an information sheet about finding your own accommodation in The Hague. Please visit The Hague University's website for more details.

It was a great experience, I did like the fact that we were very much involved in activities whithin the accademic courses. It was a great move as it gave me the chance to apply for a perfect job with a managerial position afterwards. Plus The Hague is a great location I did love the walks on the beach...
