Tezpur University was established by an Act of Parliament (Act. No. 45, 1993) in 1994.

The objects of Tezpur University are to strive to offer employment oriented and interdisciplinary courses, mostly at post graduate level, to meet the local and regional aspirations and the development of the state of Assam. The university also means to offer courses and promote research in areas which are of special and direct relevance to the region and in the emerging areas in Science and Technology. Tezpur University means to promote national integration through the study of the rich cultural heritage of the region and utilize distance education techniques and modern communication technologies to provide access to higher education for a larger segment of the population.

Over the years Tezpur University has grown substantially in terms of departments and academic programmes as well as in infrastructure. The University conducts rigorous admission tests for aspirants for the various academic programmes at the National level at at centres spread across the North Eastern Region.

The Tezpur University has the following five schools :

• ENGINEERING

The unitary nature of the Tezpur University allows ample resource and opportunity to be made at the disposal of the students. The Student Teacher ratio in this University is one of the lowest in the country, which means closer attention to the student. The average class size is about 25 and hence the classroom environment is entirely cohesive for one-to-one discussion. This also facilitates group assignments and presentations to be more meaningful and frequent.

The computer centre has implemented a campus LAN with optical fiber backbone connecting the academic as well as administrative departments spread over the University campus of 241 acres. Internet connectivity is provided throughout with a VSAT link and BSNL Leased Line. Wireless LAN has also been set-up to extend the LAN connectivity to the Administrative complex, Hostels and the residential areas.

The serene nature of Tezpur University and its existence away from the city make the environment more pleasant and conducive for a perfect Gurukul. As a result moral of the students remains high, oblivious to the politics of student life and thereby preparing themselves to be good employees in the life ahead of them.
