Description of Tampere and accommodation

Tampere

Tampere is the 3rd largest city in Finland, and the largest inland center in all the Nordic countries. Established in 1779 by the King of Sweden Gustav III, Tampere is situated on the banks of the Tammerkoski rapids. This location set the city up to become an industrial pioneer in Finland, started with the creation of the nation's first paper mill in 1783.

Today, over 213,000 people live in the versatile city of Tampere, where research, education, business, sports, and culture thrive. Tampere is also a center of leading-edge technology, and is one of the 3 most rapidly developing regions in Finland.

Among Finns who plan on moving, Tampere is rated the most attractive city. It is no wonder, as the city has a unique combination of city life and nature. Tampere is built on an isthmus between 2 lakes - Pyhäjärvi and Näsijärvi - and has around 200 lakes and ponds scattered throughout the area. In fact, 24% of Tampere's surface area is water! There are also numerous nature reserves in Tampere, such as Pyynikki and Viikinsaari. Pyynikki is the world's highest gravel ridge, formed over 10,000 years ago by ice and sea.

Accommodation at the Tampere University of Technology is organised by TOAS. Student flats include basic furniture such as a desk, chair, chelf, kitchen table with chairs, and a bed with a mattress. Kitchenware, towels, bed sheets, and desk lamps are not provided. In the basement of each accommodation building are laundry facilities for the students living there. TUT accommodation has an Internet connection available.

Students are not permitted to smoke either inside, neither in their rooms nor in the common areas of the accommodation. There are no cleaning services, so students must take care of their own spaces. Quiet hours inside the student accommodation are enforced between 22.00 and 7.00.
