The student experience at the University of Tartu
Read about what the international students that have attended the Estonia's oldest and most renowned have experienced to get a good insight of what student life at the University of tartu is like!
If you need good quality knowledge
and insight, I highly encourage you to explore the University of Tartu. This intellectual
and cultural hub, Estonia's oldest and most renowned University, helped me to
develop a challenging way of thinking and to view old topics in a new ways. The combination of what I have learned
in a classroom and from my numerous foreign and Estonian friends and colleagues
had become an eye opening experience about the world to the rest of my life.
Maya Kobalia, UT Baltic Studies MA Programme

As an American student of history, I was interested in the Baltics
because of their long and complicated past. The University of Tartu appealed to
me because I could take courses in modern religious and political issues while
simultaneously learning how to translate Sumerian cuneiform. Tartu’s
international programs introduced me to the world of European politics while
furthering my education in history.
My short time in Tartu was wonderful, even though my Estonian
friends say the weather this semester was unusually nice. I’ve fallen in love
with the culture and the laid-back way of living here and it will be difficult
to readjust to relatively fast-paced life back in the United States. I would
say my favorite moments in Tartu have been spent sitting at cafés and
restaurants with the other international students and our new Estonian friends,
sharing our experiences and opinions and gaining new perspectives.
Peter Zasowski, Marshall
University, USA
Tartu is an
amazing place for foreign students. The university was really well-organized
comparing to my home university. Everything was so well arranged and was made
easy for the students. The range of subjects that foreign students could choose
was very diversified.
When I came
to Estonia, I had expected that the facilities would be much older but I was
mistaken: everywhere wireless internet, free computer rooms, beamers and
projectors, very well maintained classrooms. I also think that the University
Library is amazing. I met great people, saw wonderful things, and experienced
the time of my life. I’m still thinking of it every day! Tartu and Estonia will
be forever in my heart and I will strongly recommend it to everybody to go
there!
Frederik Declercq, Artevelde University in Ghent, Belgium
Tartu is like a fairytale city!
It was very cold on the first day when I arrived here and everything reminded
me of a magnificient winter painting. The painting started to change slowly when
spring came – suddenly there were more people everywhere. Tartu has many green
parks, river Emajõgi running through the city center and very many events
taking place all the time. It gives you the chance to enjoy every day during
every season. Each day is better than the one before! Moreover, the beautiful
historical buildings make you feel like in a fairytale and living in a
different time and space. Helpful smiling people make you feel safe and as a
part of Tartu -
the city that I still love, miss and remember.
