Psychology at Birkbeck can trace its roots to the beginnings of the scientific study of the subject in this country a century ago. The Department of Psychology at King's College was founded in 1906 and moved to Birkbeck College during the Second World War, when Birkbeck was the only University of London College to keep teaching students in London. The School provides an active and vibrant research environment which directly informs its teaching.

Birkbeck encourages applications from students without traditional qualifications and offers a wide range of programmes to suit every entry level. The academic reputation of Birkbeck  attracts many traditional full-time postgraduate students.

Birkbeck ranks in the top 25% of UK multi faculty HEIs, according to the 2008 RAE results. The RAE rated the quality of research in a range of subjects at 159 Higher Education Institutions in the UK and showed that Birkbeck submissions from Earth Sciences, Psychology, History, Classics and Archaeology and History of Art, Film and Visual Media were rated in the top 5 nationally.

All 17 Birkbeck submissions to the RAE had at least 60% of their research classified as 'internationally recognised'. Also, 11 of 17 submissions had the majority of their research categorised as 'internationally excellent' and 'world leading'.

The academics at Birkbeck are engaged in conducting research that is actively pushing back the boundaries of the world's knowledge across the disciplines.
