Ph.D. studies are designed on the one hand to provide a strong grounding in highly specialized areas of modern physics and on the other hand to give students the opportunity to develop interdisciplinary skills. All of this is provided by a series of postgraduate courses and frequent seminars in the interdisciplinary environment of the Institute of Physics. By active participation in the group seminars the Ph.D. students can learn the art of scientific presentation. They can choose a supervisor from many senior staff scientists and are fully integrated in the research program of the Institute.Ph.D. students have been co-authors of approx. 30% of the recent journal papers published by the academic staff of the Institute. The research covers a broad range of currently developed areas in: condensed matter physics (experimental and theoretical), molecular physics, nuclear physics, elementary particle physics, statistical physics, astrophysics and cosmology, medical physics, physics of nano- and mesoscopic systems, computer physics. The dissertation for the degree of Ph.D. shall normally be completed and defended within 4 years.

The University of Silesia in Katowice, founded
in 1968, is one of the biggest public universities in Poland and among the most
honored universities in Upper Silesia. More than 37,000 students are studying at Bachelor, Master and Doctoral
levels. The close link with the industrial region and local industries is an important
factor for meeting the needs of students and ensuring the relevance of the
courses.
The University of Silesia in Katowice provides excellent research and educational conditions and aims to meet the demands of a changing labour market. It is dynamic, open, and friendly. The University participates in European Commission initiatives and is a member of various international associations. It cooperates with more than 300 universities worldwide through exchanging programmes, academic staff, moderating joint research and educational projects.
The university's School of Polish Language and Culture is a specialized unit of the University of Silesia which offers an assortment of courses designed to improve Polish language skills and provide knowledge about Polish culture. The educations offered at the School include monthly, semester-long and year-long courses which can be easily matched up to the level of personal linguistic ability.
International students interested in taking up studies in Polish can join a Polish Language Course for Foreigners Planning to Study in Poland.
The University of Silesia in Katowice has particularly strong links with European partner colleges, as well as cooperation with partners from other continents. This resulted in over 400 partnership agreements with almost 300 institutions from 36 countries around the world, which enable exchange students and academic staff to conduct joint educational and research activities.
In the past years, one of the priorities of the university policy has been about the internationalization of educational, research, and artistic activities. It takes part in all major EU education and research programmes.
Most projects are accomplished with partners in Germany, Czech Republic, France and the UK. The research projects increase the number of exchange students and staff. At the moment, almost 50 foreign academics and scientists are employed at the University of Silesia in Katowice.
The University's biologists and physicists are engaged in honoured international research programmes organised by CERN in Geneva and International Atomic Agency.
Some research teams have successfully applied for funding for research projects within the fifth, sixth and seventh Framework Programmes of co-operation in research and technological development. Participation in European research and educational programmes is for the University of Silesia in Katowice one of the most important sources of financing in the near future.
