Studying at the NLSIU facilitates all round personality development.

The National Law School of India (NLSIU) started its journey in 1987 under the stewardship of its Founder Director, Dr. N.R. Madhava Menon. The first batch of students joined on July 1, 1988 in the integrated five year B.A., LL.B. (Hons.) Course. The NLSIU started its courses in the premises of the Central College, Bangalore University. The NLSIU moved to its own premises at the present address in 1992.

Studying at the NLSIU is quite exciting. It facilitates all round personality development. A large number of retired Judges of the Supreme Court and High Courts as well as Senior Advocates have offered to assist the NLSIU in its teaching and research programmes making education at NLSIU a rare and exciting experience to the student body. The teaching methods adopted for the degree program are such as to promote multi-disciplinary inquiry and practical appreciation of problems. The method of teaching involves lectures, discussions, case studies, Moot Courts and project work. An innovative feature of the teaching method followed by the NLSIU is the cooperative teaching where two or more teachers jointly offer a course and interact with the students in the same class. This is particularly useful for the multi-disciplinary analysis of socio-legal problems.

There is a high degree of interaction between the students and the teachers in the classroom. Faculty at the Law School is very accessible. With an excellent faculty-student ratio, the Law School provides an exciting opportunity for the students to interact with the teachers and their colleagues.

national_law_school2Beyond exchanges between students and faculty in the classroom, there are more formal means of communication aimed at improving the class experience and student life. At the end of each course, the students are expected to complete an evaluation of the courses undertaken by them in that trimester. The comments in these evaluation forms are taken seriously by students and the faculty.

Another characteristic feature of the NLSIU is the number of working days it devotes for its teaching programs every year. The trimester system of instruction demands maximum number of working days in each trimester for completing the course requirements. Accordingly, the NLSIU schedule provides for instruction extending to not less than seventy-five (75) days in each trimester including the period for holding examinations. Thus NLSIU has over 225 working days each year devoted for instructional purposes alone.

Graduates from Law School follow a variety of career paths. A number of them choose to go into active 'practice' i.e. litigation at the courts. The Law School alumni may be found at the Supreme Court and most High Courts in the country either in independent practice or working under India's top lawyers. Others choose to go into law firms. Major law firms in India find a good representation of Law School alumni. Alumni can also be found litigating in the US, UK, Canada and Singapore. Some students choose to go into companies as legal advisors. A number of graduating students decide to pursue higher studies. Many pursue specialization in a variety of fields including public international law, international trade law and intellectual property laws. Students from the NLSIU have won as many as eleven Rhodes Scholarships for study at Oxford over the last seven years.

Accommodation

Bangalore

The National Law School is a residential University with all its 500 odd students living on campus. For the many to whom this is their first time living away from home, hostel life offers many exciting experience. Residing on campus enables students to widen their horizon and acquire important inter-personal skills. The Hostel on campus is a miniature society. Here, one will meet people of very different backgrounds and personalities.

Contact with hostel-mates is much more intensive than that of the earlier contacts with school classmates. With more interaction comes greater need to adjust and accept, especially with the roommates. One needs to discuss issues of common interest with the roommates to sort out existing problems particularly when opinions are divided. One learns to be tactful and patient and learn to look at things from another person's perspective.

Participating in the management of the hostels also helps one to gain valuable organizational skills. There is really a lot to learn and hostel life forms an integral part of education at the National Law School. There are three Halls of Residence for men (the Ganga, the Kaveri and the Himalaya) and three for women (the Nilgiris, Annexe and Mess Block) at NLSIU. There is also a P.G. Women's Hostel. The Halls of Residence have their own student-managed Dining Hall and Kitchen, which serve vegetarian food on all days and non vegetarian food on designated days. Students of 1st year are generally allotted dormitories.

Women have a choice of twin seaters, in addition to the triple seater rooms. There are also a few single rooms available in both hostels. These are usually given to students in the final year. All rooms have a cot, cupboard, chair and desk. Students are advised to bring their own mattresses, curtains and bed-linen.

All hostels at NLSIU have 24 hour running hot water. Laundry facilities are also available on campus. All hostels have their own generator and hence there is an uninterrupted power supply. The Halls of Residence have a common room, each equipped with cable television, limited facilities for indoor games and a small in-house library. The Hostels also have Tea/Coffee vending machines.
