Description of Master's programme in European Law

International Master's programme in European LawRadboud University Nijmegen offers an International Master's programme in European Law.

The influence of the European Union on the regulations and rights of its member states is growing. Outside Europe too, the European legislative system is important, as it can be seen as providing an example to the rest of the world. As a lawyer you can no longer ignore European law. Whereas other study programmes have chosen the broad approach, the focus in Nijmegen is on depth. You will receive a thorough education in European law, covering competition law, immigration law, external relations law, judicial protection, peace and safety and public international law. This programme provides a sound basis for an international legal career.

You will receive lectures and guidance from experts. The Faculty of Law has an international reputation in the field of immigration law, European law and private law. Nijmegen lawyers regularly do research assignments for the European Union and the Dutch government. The Business and Law research institute is known for its expertise in competition law.

The Faculty of Law has deliberately chosen a small-scale approach and this has contributed to its reputation for quality and excellence. There is close contact between lecturers and students and, as a Master's student, you too will receive personal guidance.

Description and information about accommodation Nijmegen

Nijmegen

Nijmegen is situated on the banks of the Waal, a branch of the Rhine in the region of the ‘Great Rivers’, and a mere 10 kilometers from the German border. Of Roman origin (its name derives from 'Noviomagus' meaning 'new market') the city celebrated its 2000th anniversary in 2005. This makes Nijmegen the oldest city in the Netherlands.

Apart from the rich history of the city, there are other facets that make Nijmegen well worth visiting: from attractive shops, cafes (there are a hundred different types of beer!) and restaurants to unique historic monuments; from a superb view over the busiest river of Europe to such lively traditions as the Street Theatre and the Concert Days; not to mention happenings such as the International Four Days Marches and the International Summer Festival.

You can stroll along the winding streets or go shopping in the city centre. The city has a characteristically intimate atmosphere that can be experienced to advantage at the many outdoor cafes. Not only is the centre of the city one of the liveliest in the Netherlands, there are also abundant cultural facilities: there are nine museums, galleries, a theatre, a concert hall and several cinemas, including an art house cinema.

You can find a lot of additional information about this beautiful city on the Radboud University web page.

Radboud University Nijmegen offers assistance to prospective Master's students looking for accommodation.

After you have sent your request for admission to a Master’s programme to the Student Affairs Office, the International Office will send you an email so you can register for the service package. Here, you can indicate that you want the assistance of the International Office in finding accommodation in Nijmegen.

All international Master’s students who come to Nijmegen for a Master’s degree programme taught in English will be guaranteed housing provided the request for admission to the Master's programme was received before the deadline for the service package, and the International Office has received the letter of acceptance from the Student Affairs Office. If you need a visa (MVV) to come to the Netherlands, the International Office cannot start looking for a room until after confirmation has been received from the IND that your MVV has been approved. This application process may take up to 2 months.

Most rooms are located within a few kilometres from the university, and can easily be reached by bus or bicycle. Rooms are furnished, but in most cases you must provide your own bed linen, pillow, blankets, towels, etc. A furnished room with shared kitchen, toilet and shower facilities will cost you approximately up to 450 euros rent a month. The rent for an apartment or house starts at about 700 euros, but is usually even higher.
