Tallinn Law School at Tallinn University of Technology is dedicated to providing the finest legal education that can be obtained in the region. The emphasis of our program is on the development of a systematic understanding of law and justice, and of the lawyer’s special obligation to society, as well as the analytical and argumentative skills which are the hallmarks of successful and respected attorneys, judges, and executives. For the most part, our students are taught under a European curriculum by a predominantly European faculty in the best tradition of open-minded, international, liberal, democratic, inquisitive, and critical European thinking.

From the very beginning of their studies, our young lawyers also take a broad range of subjects in international, comparative, and European Union law. At the same time, students can select introductory courses on the laws and legal systems of important trading and political partners, such as the US, Germany, Great Britain, and Russia. As a matter of fact, the range of international, comparative, and European Union law subjects offered regularly places our program amongst the most international law programs in the world.

There are professors from the United States, Western Europe and the rest of the world. The professors are highly qualified academics, and well-respected legal practitioners, including public officials, public prosecutors, trial lawyers and judges.

The 1-year master program (60 ECTS) is designed for students who have already completed an 160-credit B.A. in Law or a comparable degree, or who wish to receive a second Master degree. The lectures take place during two intensive study weeks (Executive style) and virtual courses. After successful completion of the program, students receive a degree of Master of Arts in Law, which allows them access to positions within the legal profession as well as Doctoral studies. The program is conditionally accredited by the Estonian Ministry of Education and Research.

The 2-year master’s program is designed for students who have already completed a 120-credit B.A. in Law or a comparable degree. The program is similar to law programs in Western Europe and the United States. The program emphases the globalisation of law and recent trends in International, European and Comparative Law.

Master program in Law is now offered in a more convenient format. Working professionals can take the advantage of a total of six intensive study weeks distributed among 18 months combined with state-of-the-art virtual learning possibilities.

The graduates of the Law School have excellent career prospects in their area of specialisation; furthermore, many institutions and law offices frequently turn to us in order to find the best specialists in their fields. Our graduates are working in both the public and private sectors, and are also members of Bar Associations in several countries and have been appointed as judges. There are several graduates with excellent international careers (at the European Bank, the European Commission and the European Court of Justice).

Description of Tallinn and accommodation

Tallinn

Tallinn, Estonia´s capital city is only 80 kilometers south of Helsinki, across the Gulf of Finland. You can get here by plane, train and bus. You can depart from Tallinn´s international airport and in 20 minutes be in Helsinki, or in less than two hours arrive at Stockholm, Copenhagen, Riga, Moscow, St. Petersburg, or Vilnius.

Tallinn is the meeting point of medieval heritage and high-tech. The jewel in Tallinn´s crown is its medieval city centre, otherwise known as The Old Town where medieval buildings and sacred structures have been preserved nearly unchanged. On the other hand Tallinn is a modern and open city with tall buildings of glass and steel, illuminated signs of major international companies, a modern airport and passenger ports. In 2007 Tallinn was selected by the European Council to be the European Capital of Culture for the year 2011.

Tallinn is also the number one city in the world which is almost fully covered with Wireless Internet. You can use your laptop almost everywhere around the city.

Many information technology inventions have gotten their start from Tallinn. Skype is one of the best-known of several Tallinn IT start-ups. The New York Times has characterized Estonia as “a sort of Silicon Valley on the Baltic Sea.” In fact, TUT is just 10 minutes away from Skype´s office, so you will be having your lectures in a truly high-tech environment.

Summer activities naturally include a lot of sunbathing on the beach. In Tallinn there are several beautiful sandy beaches, and water that may seem too chilly for a southerner is just right for any Estonian who wants to swim, play water polo or go windsurfing. In winter snow abounds, so you can go sledging, skiing and snowboarding, which have become popular in Estonia. And if you feel a bit tired and just want to relax, you can go to one of our spas or some water centre to have a great time with your friends. The Estonian restaurant scene is amazingly diverse, especially in Tallinn. There are Indian, Tex-Mex, Thai and Georgian restaurants, as well as Hungarian, Japanese, Chinese and Greek ones. There are numerous nightclubs with styles of music to fit every taste. So there are plenty of things to do with your spare time.

Here are the main options for arranging student accommodation in Tallinn:

• On campus accommodation – students, who need University accommodations should notify their intent at the time of applying for admission. There are double rooms available, all fully furnished with a private bathroom and free Wireless Internet. There are new dormitories being built as well and these should be ready in 2009.

• Private rooms and apartments for rent – the International Study Center can help you find accommodation in the city. Apartments are usually found through newspaper advertisements, the Internet or rental agencies operating in Tallinn. Prices depend on the apartment, the location and number of rooms.
