MA in Egyptian Language and Culture
The programme’s wide-ranging curriculum covers most of the
linguistic and cultural history of Pharaonic, Greco-Roman and Coptic
Egypt. As part of the MA programme, you will visit excavations and
research projects in Egypt and you will learn about the department’s
own field and research projects, including excavations at Saqqara and
the Dakhla Oasis. The staff members cooperate with colleagues from
universities and research institutes in Germany, Egypt, France, Italy,
Poland and the United States, on project topics covering:
- Egyptian art history
- Egyptian archaeology
- Egyptian Religion
- Coptic Egypt
- Social and economic history of Ancient Egypt
The
aim of the programme is to ensure that you reach an expert level in the
field of Egyptology, and have the chance to pursue your chosen area of
specialisation. You will acquire a thorough knowledge of—and insight
into—your chosen specialisation, particularly the topic covered by your
MA thesis. In addition, you will gain knowledge and understanding of
the research methods used in Egyptology. You will be able to work
independently and be able to formulate clear and substantiated
arguments. You will be able to explain research results clearly—through
discussion and a written thesis—and will be able to plan and carry out
a research project under expert supervision.
