The earliest written reference to Linköping, home to
Linköping University is from 1120 when a bishopric was established. Building of the cathedral began in 1230, and twenty years later a cathedral school was set up. The 1620s saw the founding of the nation’s first three gymnasia, one of which was sited in Linköping. But it took another 350 years for it to become a university town.
A population of 138 000 makes it the fifth largest city in Sweden. Many of the industries are high tech enterprises ranging from aircraft manufacture to NBIC technologies (nanotechnology, biotechnology, information technology, and cognitive science). The concentration of knowledge has encouraged the relocation of government agencies such as the Swedish Road and Transport Research Institute, the Swedish Defense Research Agency, the National Laboratory of Forensic Science and the Swedish Geotechnical Institute.
The town’s many parks and green areas make a pleasing urban setting. In the near vicinity are jogging paths, golf courses, lakes and waterways, indoor and outdoor tennis courts and athletics grounds. Those more interested in cultural life can enjoy the theater, cinemas, museums, libraries, and art galleries. Major musical events are hosted at the mid-city concert hall and the sports center.

In Linköping, most students live in student housing areas situated within cycling distance of the campus. Many students live in co-ed dormitories, which are organised in corridor groups. Each corridor consists of eight student rooms with bathrooms, a shared living room and a shared kitchen. Laundry facilities are available in each building. Each student room is furnished with a bed, a desk, bookshelves and chairs. Students furnish their own bedding. For more information you are adviced to look at the housing and accomodation section of the
