Description of LLB (Hons) Law

LLB (Hons) LawThe LLB (Hons) Law programme provides a rigorous and challenging learning experience, which is commended by employers and provides graduates with a range of professional career paths within and outside the legal profession. The aim is to consolidate and enhance your intellectual capability for independent learning through legal research, reasoning and argument. You will acquire valuable transferable skills including oral/written communication, group-work, advocacy, interviewing and negotiation, critical thinking, e-presentation/data retrieval, and clinical/work-based practice.

The course comprises 'core' (c) and optional (o) modules. The options are law-based and allow students to study specialised areas of law in more depth. Most law options require, as a prerequisite, study of a related core module. Students may also study up to 60 credits worth of non-law electives, which are optional modules delivered by other departments across the University. Modules will either be 10, 20, 30 or 40 credits in value, see course outline section below for breakdown of modules.

The aim of the LLB (Hons) Law programme is to offer the opportunity for intellectual development, to acquire fundamental legal knowledge for progression into the legal profession, the wider employment market or further study and to provide flexibility in developing specialised interests. The degree places a strong emphasis on the development of core legal and other transferable skills, such as oral, written, e-communication and critical reasoning skills, advocacy, personal development planning and group work. UCLan adopts a wide range of learning and teaching methods, designed to support you to develop as an independent learner. These include interactive online sessions, e-learn activities, workshops, reflective clinical legal education, group work, research exercises, presentations, mooting and debating as well as the more traditional seminars and lectures. You will have more structured class contact in year one of your law programme to support your transition to Higher Education.

As part of the course, you may choose to undertake a placement in a legal environment and/or undertake a project or dissertation on an area of law of interest to you. There are over 30 diverse optional subjects covering many areas of public and private law, which each draw on underpinning economic, social and political policies and philosophies in domestic or international contexts. You also have the opportunity to study electives from the full portfolio of the University's courses.

Assesment in the LLB (Hons) Law programme will consist of unseen examinations (part of the assessment diet for all 'core' subject modules); seen examinations; end of module and in-course formative coursework assessments; e-quizzes; e-case studies; group presentations; portfolios; pod casts; personal development reflective diaries; and oral performance in seminars, legal skills, moots and debates.

You might find it a bit of a surprise coming to Preston for the first time. Maybe you're not sure where it is but you know it's Up North somewhere. Preston is a large and thriving city with good transport links by road, rail and air, making Preston an ideal location for national and international travel.

Situated in quite literally the heart of North West England, Preston is the gateway to Lancashire's beautiful landscape and contemporary developments. With the city's superb road, rail, air and sea links Preston provides a fast and easy gateway to national and international destinations.

University of Central Lancashire's campus is situated in the Adelphi Quarter of the city which offers excellent amenities on Friargate and around campus. These include a campus Cinema, shops, cafes and bars. As with any city we have an excellent schedule of cultural events throughout the year offering our fabulous and ever popular Caribbean Carnival, Preston Mela celebrating the Asian culture and community and European Markets. There's always something going on and sometimes we even have extra's such as Radio 1's BIG WEEKEND which came to Preston in May 2007.

Living at the University of Central LancashirePreston brings together students from different backgrounds and circumstances often forging lifelong friendships. You may be surprised to find a multicultural population, both on campus and in the city. Many of the shops, restaurants, places of worship and festivals reflect this cultural diversity.

The cost of living in the Central Lancashire region is generally lower than in many other parts of the UK. All accommodation is self catering and you will find very reasonably priced shops and food outlets on or close to the campus.

Accommodation on campus is generally allocated to encourage students to integrate with others from the UK and from other countries. If you have particular preferences about sharing it is important to make this request early.

When you are made an offer of an academic place at the University of Central Lancashire, the Admissions Office will provide you with information on how to apply for your accommodation.
International students are encouraged to arrive at the University four weeks before the UK students (or one week in the case of European students), to attend a programme specifically designed to help them settle into life in the UK. Accommodation for this period will be arranged on your behalf, if the University is notified of your attendance on the programme. Instructions on how to do this will be sent with your offer letter. For the rest of the year, every student will be offered a choice of places to live, which are close to the campus and managed or registered by the University.
